Iditarod 2013 – Day 2

Iditarod 2013 MapLots of changes this morning as people start to sort out the long haul running order. Martin has two hours on the Mackey brothers and Matt Failor, and tends to use it to get the best, and safest passage through the Stepping Stones and Dalzell Gorge. Getting by those two with a minimum of damage to your team is worth a lot at the end of the race.

Matt Failor made a major move to get to the front, but if he didn’t over-stress the puppies, it will be worth it in the long run.

The Mushers in bold are former winners of the Iditarod, while italics indicates Yukon Quest winners. The numbers in parentheses are their Bib numbers. The small “R” indicates a total rookie, while the small “Q” indicates an Iditarod rookie who has completed a Yukon Quest.

These are the official standings. That means they are official, not that they are correct. Things jump around a lot as people decide to update the standings. This problem is especially bad in the back of the pack, as no one bothers to update those standings when the lead is changing.

This post will be updated during the day, and the map changed on all posts to reflect the current situation.

Noticed that Scott Janssen (the “Mushing Mortician”), dropped out at Rainy Pass. Apparently he had some concern for his dogs, but not sure what happened.

One of the comments below the article said: “I heard the dogs were mortified…”

I know, I know, a bad one, but it still made me laugh.

I read that last year he had to give mouth-to-snout resuscitation to his collapsed lead dog, Marshall, so one could understand that he would exhibit an abundance of caution.

Update on Scott Janssen:

His wife posted on their Facebook page that Bear collapsed from the heat. Also, several other dogs were showing signs of dehydration. Apparently, Scott had to “inch” his way back to Rainy Pass. After deciding that he’d have to drop as many as 5 dogs at once if he wanted to continue, he decided it was too early in the race to be down that number of dogs.

But the main thing is, the dogs all seem to be fine now.

It’s the heat. Aliy should do well because the Quest was warm and her team has the best dogs from the team that won the Quest. She runs her own race, and it looks like her schedule is working for her.

Scott’s dogs are more in the pet category than the ‘professional’ mushers, so he has more concern for them. They also get less exercise that many of the dogs running the race.

Lance has said he is only using four of the dogs from his Quest team in this race, so he is still looking for a team.
