Iditarod 2013 – Day 11

Iditarod 2013 MapMitch Seavey is the oldest musher to win the Iditarod as he crossed the finish 24 minutes ahead of Aliy. Mitch’s son, Dallas, is the youngest musher to win the Iditarod. Dallas also finished just ahead of Aliy. This is the second time Mitch has won the race.

Mitch kept a consistent pace, but Aliy just couldn’t make up the time. She made up a minute between Safety and Nome, but lost 12 minutes between White Mountain and Safety.

Update: Charley Bejna (15) scratched on the trail to Shaktoolik. He only had 7 puppies left, and wasn’t sure they could make it in.

One of the most annoying things about the Iditarod Trail Committee is that they stop reporting on the back of the back after the leaders reach Nome. Cindy Abbott (60) left Eagle Island more than 24 hours ago for the trail into Kaltag, and seemingly disappeared. She has been running decent times, so she should have arrived in 12 or 13 hours, but there is no indication that she has. Maybe her GPS is working and showing progress, but they haven’t bothered to update their standings for those in the back all day. This is not a very professional way of operating a long distance race.

The Mushers in bold are former winners of the Iditarod, while italics indicates Yukon Quest winners. The numbers in parentheses are their Bib numbers. The small “R” indicates a total rookie, while the small “Q” indicates an Iditarod rookie who has completed a Yukon Quest.

These are the official standings. That means they are official, not that they are correct. Things jump around a lot as people decide to update the standings. This problem is especially bad in the back of the pack, as no one bothers to update those standings when the lead is changing.

This post will be updated during the day, and the map changed on all posts to reflect the current situation.

Congratulations to Mitch! What a great run for him.

Such a shame for Aliy, though, to finish just barely behind the winner for two years in a row! Ah well, maybe next year.

As of now, I see twelve are now in to Nome. I notice Martin Buser is in 17th place. He sure had a great run in the beginning, and I was beginning to wonder if he might not pull it off, but it wasn’t to be this year.

There are still a couple of people that have just left Eagle Island, so there’s still a while left to go before everyone is in. Looking at your weather widgets, it looks like Kaltag is cold (15 degrees now) and clear, so maybe it will be good sledding for the rest coming in.

Congrats to Mitch, definitely. I was starting to worry there for a couple of days that it would turn into a boating contest rather than a sledding contest. Luckily it turned cold again.

In other news, Floriduh’s Lt. Governor resigns after the FBI arrests dozens in a corruption probe involving a phony veterans’ charity. Tends to indicate that she’s going to be in the next batch to do the perp walk . What, corruption in Florida? Really? 🙂

Aliy is going to be fit to be tie for a year. Since Allen won the Quest this year, I can see Aliy putting all of their resource behind her next Iditarod.

Mitch won the same way John Baker won a few years back – consistency. His team maintained a steady, consistent pace. Aliy moved too early, and couldn’t sustain it. Based on interviews after she got to Nome, I think she may have the flu as soon as she slows down enough to notice. She was perfectly placed coming out of White Mountain, but didn’t have enough left to close the deal. She thought she was closer to Mitch than she actually was, and may have even fallen asleep for a while on the run.

Yeah, Badtux, it was looking bad on the Yukon, and I was concerned about the people who live there. Too many have become too dependent on the snowmobiles, and if the ice won’t support them, and the river isn’t clear enough for boats, they are stuck. There are no roads, so everything would have to be flown in which really jacks up prices.

As for Carroll, she has been a disaster in the making from day one, and she was working for the king of Medicare/Medicaid fraud, so it’s not surprising. There are almost no real veterans’ charities. Every one I have researched for my Mother has come up smelling like a sewer. The only ones I have seen that are doing anything useful are purely local.

You elect Republicans, you have to expect corruption. It is part of running ‘government like a business’, for a given meaning of ‘business’.
