Sunny Florida

Tomorrow the temperature is supposed to reach the mid to upper 60s, which is helpful, because Monday night through Tuesday morning, the temperature is forecast to drop into the lower 20s.

So Sunday will be spent moving and covering plants, and installing the tent over the water garden which also provides a warmer place for the cats to hang out.

The camellia by my Mother’s front door is already putting out blooms, and they will be destroyed, as will many of the more tropical plants in the area. These swings are maddening. You can’t do any long term planning because you don’t know from day to day, much less week to week whether you will be sweating or freezing.

The crew on the Chinese icebreaker and Russian research ship have more reliable weather than the Northern Gulf Coast.

Less than an hour ago in Houston it was 64°F… now it’s 55°F. And it’s not stopping there: tonight it’s supposed to be 26°F. As I said on my blog, when Burlington, VT is forecast for 31°F and Houston is forecast for 26°F, I feel I have cause to complain!

The cars are winterized… I checked the antifreeze myself… and Stella’s decorative gardening phase seems to have passed, so there are no plants to move. Because Houston’s drivers have no clue how to drive on ice, we’re staying home.

Our cats may pretend they want to go outside, but I know they wouldn’t if they actually could. I’m glad to hear your ferals have a warm place to hang out!

I just got back from tent building over the most obvious plantings, but a lot of the other stuff is just going to be killed if we get serious rain, because the roots will freeze. At least the fleas and fireants will die back for a year.

I’m going to have to construct some sort of permanent feline enclosure. You can’t just buy a dog house, because cats want two exits to an enclosed space.

mine, being indoor kitties, are stuck with having a few extra cardboard boxes.

I’m looking at some options to build and enclosure for the heating pad. Dog houses are not useful because they have only one exit.
