Still Busy

Not everyone I’m dealing with is a hemorrhoid, there have been organizations and businesses that deal with death in a reasonable fashion.

The Davis Watkins Funeral Home made their process simple and straight-forward, keeping me informed of the progress. They are the people having to deal with the mess at Arlington.

Eglin Federal Credit Union took care of returning the necessary money to Social Security, and creating a new account. They are keeping both accounts open until we know that Social Security is sending my check to the new account.

Even the people on Eglin Air Force Base took care of all of the Department of Defense notifications required in minutes when I turned in my Mother’s ID card.

I still have the local Social Security office, the local VA office, and a commercial Bank to go, but there is definitely a light at the end of the tunnel for everything except the transfer of my Mother’s remains to Arlington.

Funeral homes know how to deal with death efficiently, both in terms of making it easy for you and making it easy for you to spend money with them. In this case they aren’t going to be making a ton of money but it’s still their job and by and large people in the funeral business (those who aren’t big chain operators anyhow) take their job seriously.

G00d to hear Bryan. Isn’t it nice to know that there are some why do try to make things as efficient as possible. Too bad it can’t all be like that, as I also discovered a few times in my life. 🙂

Yes, Badtus, the Arlington hang-up is costing them money, and they are a small local business, one of the few remaining in the area. They are considerably cheaper than anyone else for Arlington inurnments because of their contract with a business across the street from the cemetery that specializes in the process of receiving ashes and delivering them to the cemetery. That’s why the change was disruptive for them as well as my family.

Kryten, at one point the woman who dealt with the account at the credit union had four people on the telephone as she bulldozed a path through regulations and bylaws – she had no intention of seeing the money in that account leaving the credit union. My younger brother who dealt with corporations his whole working life was impressed.

I “bank” with a credit union for exactly that reason. They’re local to me and if there is a problem with my account, I can escalate all the way up to the CEO’s office if necessary because she’s in the exact same building that I go into to do any other banking that I do. There’s never been any such problem because they know their **** and are in business to take care of their customer-owners, not in business to rip off their customers for profit.

Actually she escalated to the executive vice president to calm down the people who thought she was being too creative using the rules in place when I became a joint owner of the account, rather than today. If there had been a real problem I would have gone to second, smaller credit union. No way would I have considered any of the local banks.
