This Is Really Annoying

I have turned off the new spam filter because it has been over active in its pursuit of spam. I’ll be talking to them to see if I can tweak it or establish a ‘white list’ so it doesn’t annoy regulars here.

Back to deleting hundreds of spam comments a day until there is a resolution, because it identified me as a spammer when I tried to comment using using my test ID in Chrome.

Good. (Well, not the manually deleting comments part! Bummer.) I tried several different comments the past couple days, and it flagged them all as spam. I was trying to report a couple connection error’s I was getting. Seems OK now.

Everything was fine up to the upgrade to 3.92 which broke my old spam filter. The new filter was written by the same developer, but it is just too intrusive – it blocked me! I also don’t like the message sent to suspected spammers. I don’t believe in accusing people of ‘crimes’ on little or no evidence – that kind of thinking leads to Fergusons.

I will continue my search.

Yeah. 🙂 I’ve looked at about 20 or so Anti-SPAM WP plugins. The ones I posted last week are ones that worked for me. This one was one of the best at stopping bots and auto-posters, but hasn’t been updated in awhile (may still work. Haven’t tried it for Months.) This is free, and they have a premium pay version.

As for me… Well the best seems to be Akismet. The community is good and large, and comments from users are positive. 🙂

I’m still working on it for my blogs. 🙂 I haven’t really found the ideal single point solution for my needs yet. It’s made more difficult because WP is a constantly moving target! It seems the only real way to overcome the problem is to pay for a pro/premium product that will be constantly maintained. Which is what I may end up doing. *shrug* Looking at the premium version of GASP (above) called Commentluv. A bit pricy IMHO. We’ll see.

I’ll see if I can get Akismet to work. The API I have is old but I’m apparently on file somewhere, so it may work. I just dumped a half dozen spam comments that were over 100 lines. Damn program won’t accept single word comments, but doesn’t have a problem with a novella.

This is so annoying. I can’t imagine what these people think they are accomplishing by putting garbage comments in old posts.

I’ve had no problems with my WP spam filter taking care of the bad stuff and letting the good stuff get through. But I didn’t do all the hard work; I had my brother do all the heavy lifting when we switched from Blogger to WP two years ago. Drop me a note if you want me to put you in touch with him to see if he can offer a hand.

I think I’ve got a handle on it, MB, but thanks for the offer. The Akismet seems to be working. I would sooner have a few spam comments get through than have any real comments get lost.
