If I were voting in the Scots’ independence election, David Cameron’s arguments against independence would convince me to vote for it. It is the policies and attitudes of politicians like Cameron that drive the independence movement.

Stephen Harper might consider finally buying new aircraft for his search and rescue crews so they don’t have to scavange parts from museums to keep the current aircraft flying. If Canada can afford to give military assistance to the Kurds, it should be able to buy some new aircraft for domestic search and rescue operations.

While I’ve been watching an Atlantic hurricane, one of my old haunts, Baja California got nailed. Jeff Masters reports that Category 3 Odile the Strongest Hurricane on Record to Hit Baja. It tore up Cabo San Lucas as is attested to by this eyewitness account.

Thank you for that. It’s been hot, humid and miserable in San Diego North County.

When I lived in Linda Vista in the city it was hot in September because of the Santa Anas, but I don’t remember humid as part of the mix. Even in San Marcos or Escondido it was never humid.

We are seeing the effects of Odile on the Gulf Coast as it is pouring moist air all the way over here. It looks like more flooding in Arizona.

I don’t get it. Herky parts are as common as dirt. You can call up Lockmart and get any part you need for the bloody thing. If they had to raid a museum for parts, it’s not because the planes are too old to keep flying — it’s because their budget has been busted to the point where they don’t even have enough dough to call Lockmart.

Oooooh… I really hope the Scot’s vote to leave!! Not least because then Snowden will have a home. he already has a job there! LOL

Edward Snowden installed as Glasgow University rector

It’s quite an interesting read. 🙂

The rector is the students’ elected representative and is expected to serve a three-year term.

Among the rector’s key duties are to attend the university court, work with the students’ representative council, and to bring student concerns to the attention of university management.

Mr Snowden beat three other candidates to the post – cyclist Graeme Obree, author Alan Bissett and Scottish Episcopal clergyman Kelvin Holdsworth.

He received 3,124 votes in the first round and 3,347 in the second, comfortably beating Mr Holdsworth, who received 1,563 votes.

Mr Snowden succeeds the former Liberal Democrat leader Charles Kennedy.

Previous rectors at Glasgow University include Winnie Mandela and Mordechai Vanunu.

Wow! Not bad at all! And so, the USA looses another brilliant and honorable person. You are running out! 😉 LOL

It’s the Canadian Air Force, so there are probably too many hoops to jump through to get anything from an outside supplier, but I think money is the big issue, Badtux. The C-130C models aren’t bad airframes, but the new models are much cheaper to fly because of better, more efficient engines, and have much better avionics. It has been over a decade since the decision was made to upgrade, but no government funding has been forthcoming.

Snowden in Scotland would definitely be an interesting development, Kryten, but I would wait to see what kind of government was installed before making any plans.

Cameron is going to look like a major loser if Scotland decides to split on his watch, and it could cause a rebirth of the independence movement in Wales. Things don’t look good for the ‘conservatives’ at the moment.

6 Kryten42 { 09.17.14 at 6:06 pm }

Good! All the conservative Gov’s should rot in hell.

I’m not worried about Snowden doing anything rash or stupid Bryan. 🙂 I’m starting to think he’s quite possibly one of the smartest guy’s in the World! 😀 He’s been using the media much better than anyone else. And he’s obviously winning the “hearts and minds” war! If the USA masters were even remotely smart, they would “forgive and forget”, but they aren’t too bright, so that won’t happen. It will be their loss. *shrug*

First off, I fixed the link so that it works in these comments and not just from the admin view of comments. Things look the same here and in admin, but they don’t work the same. When a comment is published the formatting routines change things and it makes a difference in links and images. What you see as the admin is not necessarily what the users get in comments. Bloody software …

I assume that Snowden will be extremely careful about his choices, as he has been since the beginning. It doesn’t say much for the vaunted Cyber Command that he has been so successful in his efforts, or that they can’t find the clues he left behind. Another ‘triumph’ of privatizing government operations!

With the current cluster of ignorance and hate that has infected the US government I don’t expect rational policies anything soon – the Republicans and their Likud handlers wouldn’t allow it.

Now we are going to train and arm ‘Syrian rebels’, but no one can guarantee that they will fight ISIS, as their enemy is Assad. Another braindead move. The best way to stop a zombie apocalypse is to channel them to Washington – zombies eat brains and in DC they’ll starve to final death.

LOL Yeah, I’ve noticed that… *quirk* whilst playing with WP! Yeah, not so much WYSISYG rather than WYSINAWYG! 😉 I have found a solution… I no longer use the basic WP Admin! I use a 3rd party Admin system. It does a lot more, and is simpler, more configurable and functional. 🙂

Well, the US dogma is that you MUST keep trying the same old thing no matter how often it fails because one day IT WILL WORK! ’cause… you know… magic!

Good plan (re: zombies)! I hadn’t thought of that! Would work in Canberra & London too! LOL

I was reading this WaPo article, curious…
Tech firm tries to pull back curtain on surveillance efforts in Washington

It doesn’t surprise me, or anyone whose ever worked in Intel. Heck, I know this was going on in the 80’s. The difference being, you needed a van for the equipment. 🙂 The electronics “spy vs. spy” game has been around a long time! But the tools are more sophisticated and smaller now.

I doubt that the USA clowns actually have much of a clue who is spying on them! Which would be a reason why they are trying so hard to down play the whole thing. LOL

If I was dealing with more than this site I would definitely get something different. It is so annoying to ‘fix’ something and then find out it is broken in a different way. I can’t use the visual editor for posts because it screws everything up in my template.

Wasn’t it Einstein who defined insanity as doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting different results? The Republicans are still waiting for at least one of their policies to work.

We couldn’t use electric typewriters because they were concerned that people could pick up signals generated by the keystrokes. These days they can’t even get contractors to use firewalls or decent virus software. It’s pathetic. We are concentrating on the offense and ignoring the defense. It’s the Rumsfeld syndrome.

This is one of the Admin/Editor systems I am trying at the moment. It’s early day’s yet, but looks good so far. It’s not free, but most of these aren’t! One of the reasons I like this one is that they have versions for WP, Drupal & ‘generic’. 🙂 It’s cheaper than most of the others. 🙂

I’m doing some housekeeping at the moment, but will check it when I get time. Since 4.0 seems to be free of obvious defects, I’ll update shortly and see what it does.

Good luck! 😀

I just came across this piece regarding Florida! I was PMSL! Talk about huge backfire! LOL It’s actually a good piece.

Bible-pushing Christians open the door for Satanic activity books in Florida schools

The Satanic Temple has responded to an Orange County, Florida decision to disseminate religious materials in public school by creating complementary materials that espouse the philosophy and practice of Satanism.

Last month, a Florida judge ruled that if the Orange County school district allowed Christian groups to disseminate Bibles and Christian-oriented religious materials in its schools, it would also have to allow atheist groups to do the same.

The spokesman for the Satanic Temple, Lucien Greaves, explained that his organization “would never seek to establish a precedent of disseminating our religious materials in public schools because we believe our constitutional values are better served by respecting a strong separation of Church and State.”

“However,” he continued, “if a public school board is going to allow religious pamphlets and full Bibles to be distributed to students — as is the case in Orange County, Florida — we think the responsible thing to do is to ensure that these students are given access to a variety of differing religious opinions, as opposed to standing idly by while one religious voice dominates the discourse and delivers propaganda to youth.”

The Satanic Temple made headlines earlier this year when it successfully petitioned the state of Oklahoma to allow it to erect a goat-headed Baphomet statue adjacent to a display of the Ten Commandments.

Greaves made it clear that, in both cases, his organization is only responding to provocations by the Christian community.

““Even as we prefer public policies respecting secularism, we feel that opportunities — such as this — to establish an equal voice for contrasting religious opinions in the public square, tend to favor marginalized, lesser-known, and alternative religions,” he said.

“I am quite certain that all of the children in these Florida schools are already aware of the Christian religion and it’s Bible, and this might be the first exposure these children have to the actual practice of Satanism. We think many students will be very curious to see what we offer.”

PMSL

The hilarious thing is, the Satanists sound more reasonable and rational than their Christian *cousins*! LOL

Made my day! 😀

They just don’t get it, they don’t understand the effects of being allowed into public space. If you do it for one, you have to do it for all. That has been what advocates for the First Amendment and religious freedom keep telling the politicians and the politicians just refuse to learn what ‘equal protection under the law’ means.

They keep trying to fund religious schools, and don’t understand that if they do that, they have to fund all religious schools including those of religions they don’t like.

You can lead a fundie to logic, but you can’t make him think.
