More Pols Hop On the Panic Train

CNN has an interview: Army major general speaks to CNN from inside Ebola quarantine. That’s right, the US Army has ‘imprisoned’ the commander of Africa Command and the inspection team he headed to West Africa.

None of these people dealt with patient care and none of them have any symptoms of anything, but they are in an isolation building on their home base in Italy for three weeks. I have a feeling that the local Italian officials had a lot to do with this. The Department of Defense has always done a lot of stupid things that were listed as ‘community relations’.

Then there is the Prime Minister of Australia who has banned visas for people from West Africa. The ABC reports on the reaction: Visa ban for visitors from Ebola-affected countries creates panic, discourages health workers needed to fight disease, African leaders say. I have a news flash for the African leaders: that is exactly why the ban was imposed.

Australia has always had a hate-hate relationship with dark-skinned peoples despite racial discrimination being outlawed in 1975. Just compare their treatment of illegal dark-skinned immigrants with their treatment of illegal light-skinned immigrants. The light-skinned immigrants have tracking bracelets installed and are out free on the streets while they wait for their deportation hearing. The dark-skinned immigrants don’t even get a hearing — they get sent to concentration camps that have been outsourced to neighboring nations that care more about money than morals.

In other words, while “White Australia” has not been official Australian policy since 1973, there are still significant biases in Australian society that are coming into play here, biases that Australia’s current Tory government is eager to play on in order to get more support. So color me unsurprised.

The government of Tony Abbott has no problem spending money to blow up poor people in far away places, but they refuse to spend money to help poor people of any color or country. They have been dismantling Australian manufacturing while supporting the extraction industries. He apparently wants to return Australia to its colonial roots.

He is trying to seal off Australia from any outside influence that might invoke a change in society.

Yep. I keep saying we are as bad as the USA. If you need more proof:

Foreign Fighters Bill passes Senate amid suggestions new laws could allow ADF to kill Australians

FYI Biship is a moron, and as batshit crazy as any Teap!

And this:

Metadata of Australians may be stored for two years under new law

And thanks Amerika for giving these bastards the idea and ammunition they needed to do these things.

Gee, Kryten, I can’t believe that you don’t see the clear need to take away the rights of millions based on the remote possibility of actually identifying one of the handful of individuals who might be deluded into becoming a combatant in a foreign war [/sarcasm]

I wonder if the politicians realize that if they keep demonizing people for being deluded into fighting in foreign wars, it may become extremely difficult to meet recruiting goals for the military?
