Let It Snow … Please

At 730PM CST it was 45°F in Cinco Bayou, 43°F with light rain in Anchorage, AK, 32°F with light snow in Fairbanks, AK, and -2°F with a wind chill of -17°F in Fairport, NY.

The Iditarod race starts on March 7th with the 11 mile parade, and they are going to have to get a snowmaking machine for that to happen, because there is no local snow to haul in. The actual racing will start on Monday, March 9th in Fairbanks, because there is no snow in southern Alaska.

If you are one of those people who denies the existence of global climate change, I wouldn’t talk about it near the Iditarod Trail Committee any time soon. They are a little busy trying to figure out how to have a sled dog race with no snow.

But… but… it was cold in New York City today, so global warming is a myth! Pfffth!

Sigh.

I’m putting up today’s temperature map for Alaska. There were no readings in the entire state below zero, and only a relatively small strip on the north coast in single digits … in Alaska … in the winter !!!

If they really need some snow, we have plenty (and then some) that we will be happy to ship to them. We have run out of places to put the stuff, and some places have stopped trying. Might be great for the ski resorts, but it doesn’t help if folks can’t drive to your location.

Alaska would love to have your snow and cold weather because they have a serious deficit in both categories. I remember having to shovel snow into a wheelbarrow in Rochester so I could get the car out, and just saying to hell with it and walking down to the bus stop to spend an hour and half getting to work, rather than 15 minutes.

I’m waiting for a report on long term trends to see if my brother in New York needs to upgrade his heating system. He is spending major money on a utility bill and still isn’t warm at this winter’s temperatures.

I hear Boston has quite a bit of snow, if anyone needs some… a few years ago, a musician friend of mine who lived all his young life in South Texas married a Boston-area woman who of course wanted to move back there; now he has the pleasure of shoveling, sometimes more than once a day. But they’re in Boston; it’s the price of keeping the spouse happy.

Boston dumps it into the harbor, like NYC, so they are already ridding the city of a lot of snow. Most cities don’t have that luxury.

A snow blower is the only way to go if you have someplace to store it. If you dress and stretch before shoveling, it’s a good way to get exercise … whether you want it or not. 🙂
