Nepal Earthquake
The US Geological Survey has the technical details on the 7.8 quake which was shallow [approx. 10 miles deep] with a epicenter in the Kathmandu Valley.
The BBC has been reporting Nepal earthquake: Death toll passes 1,000.
More than 1,000 people have been killed in Nepal’s deadliest earthquake for more than 80 years, police say.
The 7.8 magnitude quake struck an area of central Nepal between the capital, Kathmandu, and the city of Pokhara.
There were also victims in India, Bangladesh, Tibet and on Mount Everest, where avalanches were triggered.
Many well-known local structures have been flattened, and the aftershocks are still continuing, causing people to sleep outside away from buildings.
The last estimate I saw was 1800 victims, but the number will probably rise higher as the rubble is searched and smaller towns are visited.

You and I believe that earthquakes are caused by ruptures in the Earth’s crust, but Westboro Baptist Church has the real reason: Nepal has not converted to Christianity, thus is being punished for being majority Hindu.
No, I’m not joking.
SIGH.
So, everyone should just ignore the measurable movement of the Indian tectonic plate that causes it to grind against the Asian plate and pushes up the Himalayan mountain range.
So what is their reasoning regarding all of the tornadoes in Kansas?
Kansas tornados? It’s because the Kansas Legislature hasn’t mandated prayer in schools and completely outlawed abortion. Duh.

Don’t get me started… I just had occasion to watch about 20 YouTube videos of tangos, ending with several interpretations of Tom Lehrer’s “Masochism Tango” pasted together by different people from clips of the Addams Family TV show… at the moment, the notion of tectonic plates grinding and pushing up mountains could sound downright erotic!
In all seriousness, I suspect the death toll will go much higher than a couple thousand, though of course I hope against hope that it won’t…
There’s always an excuse, Badtux, always a rationalization to cover the gaping holes in their ‘logic’.
The current totals only really reflect Kathmandu losses. There are going to be entire villages that were wiped out by landslides, when they can finally get out to areas beyond the large towns and cities.
Injuries are running more than twice as high as the fatalities.
