In Sled Dog News

Dallas Seavey, who has won 3 out of the last 4 Iditarods has come up with a new piece of training equipment: a refrigerated dog treadmill. Normally during warm weather sled dogs don’t move around much, because they have real problems with warm weather, and, yes, while they are short, summers in Alaska are warm. This will help maintain the conditioning of the dogs year round, giving Dallas an advantage.

I once sold an old worn-out treadmill for $50 to someone who was going to use it to train her greyhounds. Apparently training greyhounds is a major pain otherwise, because they’re so fast that even running them with a bicycle doesn’t really do the job.

I had a neighbor who had a dog that needed a lot of exercise, but the dog was so powerful that both the neighbor and his girlfriend couldn’t keep up, so they bought a treadmill to tire the dog out.

is that cool or what. 🙂

the fluffy black dog used to race the retired greyhounds at the dog park – and win…. it didn’t take him long at all to figure out that he could turn on a dime while they needed to make wide turns, so in the true spirit of calvinball, as soon as the greyhounds pulled ahead he changed the direction of the chase/race. 😛

It sounds like a real advancement to training, although it would probably be more useful in the Quest than the I-rod.

FBD was wise enough to run his race, not his opponent’s 🙂
