Shake, Rattle, or Melt

At 8:49 AM CDT the US Geological Survey recorded a magnitude 4.0 earthquake 1km North of Piedmont, California. This quake was at a depth of 3.3 miles on the Hayward Fault in the San Francisco Bay area.

This somewhat shallow quake would have felt worse than would be expected from the magnitude. Given the absurdly hot temperatures that are occurring in the area, people will be conflicted about staying outside from worry about the shaking, or finding whatever air conditioned spaces are available.

Absurdly hot ‽ (interobang) 4.2 is just a mellow fellow. Here in North san Diego where its 84°F with 84% humidity, we are wilting to death

I just got off the phone with family on the coast in San Diego. They were calling because their daily walk was impossible. There have been triple digit temps on the coast of Northern California – it is just weird.

I was up in the Sierra Nevada on Sunday morning. Nice cool temperatures up there. I got home at around 4PM Sunday afternoon and it was 101F outside, and 95F indoors. Needless to say I turned on the A/C in my bedroom immediately, which promptly cooled it to 20F below the outside temperature, or 81F. Still too bloody hot, but better than 101F!

All you want to do is lay in front of the AC fan, drink ice water, and sweat.

Here in H-town we finally got some relief in the past two days. After three solid weeks with no rain and triple-digit temp’s, we really needed it!

You guys have had floods followed by drought. We have been having thunderstorms daily which makes things muggy. I’m not sure that the 7 inches you have had around Houston is what you really wanted.

And we’re on fire out here in the west. They’re holding Worldcon in Spokane, Washington right now. The attendees report that it’s like holding a science fiction convention on the wrong side of the gates of hell. There is the constant smell of fire and brimstone from all around, and the sky is smoke-filled and glowing red. Here in California we’re not as bad as up there in Washington and Idaho, but the fires are springing up all over, and sooner or later Calfire is going to exhaust themselves dashing back and forth putting them out and one of them is going to get really, really big before someone can get to it. Yuck. Just yuck. :(.

Brrr. Some of those fires are popping up distressingly close to populated places…

From NoCal to Alaska the Pacific Coast is alight and they are running out of resources. They are asking for aid from Australia because they have already got all of the resources from North America committed included the National Guard and regular military units.

The fact that this July was the hottest since we started keeping records in 1880 has not been any help. Things are so dry that the only thing that thunderstorms are producing are more fires.

Just praying for a very wet El Niño.

It is doing a good job at suppressing the Atlantic Hurricane season, and it just continues to get stronger. The probability of increased rain is there if the jet stream doesn’t force the systems to the South.
