Tropics

At 8:30AM CDT Erika was downgraded to a remnant low after crossing the eastern tip of Cuba. It is still over very warm water and may regenerate if the wind shear and dry air conditions decrease. The NHC has designated it Invest 90L and continues to watch it.

I noticed that John Ellis “JEB¡¡¡¡¡¡” Bush is touting his experience with hurricanes as governor of Florida. The only two things he did regarding hurricanes were to approve the promotion of Craig Fugate to Director of Emergency Management in Florida and then got out of the way. Mr. Fugate is currently the Director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

That said, half the battle in management is to find the right person for the job, hire him, and then get out of his way. In that respect at least J.E.B. did better than his brother.

The old director quit, and Craig was the assistant – not exactly a brilliant hiring decision, but he did stay out of the way while Craig did the job he trained for and worked at for decades. Craig also learned to remind the governor to call the Feds for a disaster declaration and asked for help, something the previous director did not do in a timely fashion for Hurricane Andrew and it led to delays in aid arriving.

In unrelated news, Terry Pratchett’s last book goes on sale September 1 here in the USA. The Brits, of course, get it a few days early. I has a sad just thinking about the fact that it’s the last one. The reviewers seem to think it is a worthy finale, even if Terry himself didn’t want it published since it was unfinished.

I can understand why Terry might not have wanted to have the book published. He had tied up all of the loose ends and essentially completed the Tiffany Aching cycle with his last book in the series, so it wasn’t really necessary. Further he hadn’t done all of the polishing which is when he inserts a lot of the puns and social sarcasm.

I’ll buy it, but I know it won’t be up to the standard of his earlier books, but bad Pratchett is so much better than the best of most other people .
