Yes, but her first three marriages happened before she found JEEEEZussss! and washed all her sins away in the blood of the lamb! So they don’t count!
Her clerks admitted that they had wanted to issue the licenses but were scared that she would fire them if they did because she had expressly forbidden them to do so. The only clerk who refused to issue licenses was her son, and the judge basically just rolled his eyes at that.
Really, this woman needs to find a different profession if she doesn’t want to comply with the oath she took on the Bible to uphold the Constitution and the laws of the State of Tennessee. Given her experience with the subject, I suggest marriage counselor. 🙂
Not complying with her oath violates Number THREE of the BIG TEN for Protestants, which is certainly in stoning territory . Marriage, OTOH wasn’t even considered religious by the Puritans. It was a decade before ministers were allowed to witness marriages in Massachusetts Bay Colony because the Puritans felt it was a civil partnership agreement.
The Bible actually talks about one man with a lot of wives, and slavery, and having children with your wife’s maid, and a lot of other things that we tend to pass laws against.
Common law marriage is part of English Common Law because only the wealthy could afford all of the costs associated with an ‘official’ marriage for centuries. As a result ‘living together’ is the historical ‘traditional marriage’ in the English speaking world.
And how the heck did my comment get under the Fred topic? LOL!
Don’t know, but moving it would exceed my comfort zone on messing with comments without explicit permission.
No problem, I run WordPress myself so I know that sometimes it just does mysterious things and you just have to run with it, LOL.
