Red Lantern
Cindy Gallea (73) came in 70th at 9:46PM CDT last night, and Mary Helwig (49) brought in the Red Lantern at 9 minutes to midnight AKDT or 2:51AM CDT this morning. Mary brought Spring with her, but the ITC was too busy counting the proceeds to notice.
Mary averaged 3.00 MPH for the race finishing in 13 days, 8 hours, 51 minutes & 30 seconds.

I was just getting ready to post that the end of the Iditarod is the beginning of spring here for me, then I noticed that your post also had that idea!
Mary lost her home last summer to a wildfire and had to leave in a hurry with just a bag and her dogs. No matter, she’s still at the Iditarod this year. Man, these people are tough! After having your home burn down and rebuilding in one year, I might have been satisfied to sit this one out. But no.
You’ve paid the entry fee and hoarded the necessary food, you either race, or you quit, and quitting doesn’t come easy in the Arctic. If you have a chainsaw, you have a house. You barter for what you need.
Leap Year threw me off, as well as a very late time.
