"There are two novels that can change a bookish 14-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs."

I love that photo. It tells you more about the woman than all the books ever written about her.
The family stayed in London during the Blitz, it was what you did, it was your duty.
“Duty”. “Responsibility”. What old-fashioned words. Like I said, that photo says more about the woman and her character than all the books ever written about her.
Nobless oblige always meant something to her and her mother.
My Mom swore she met HRH when she and her sisters and brothers went to help clean up after the blitz. They were living in Essex at the time. Mom had that photo & others in a scrap book. She told me once that what the picture doesn’t show, is a lot of watchful soldiers with itchy trigger fingers! LOL My Mom lied about her age (16 then) and enlisted in the Royal Navy to be a Nurse. 🙂 (And therein lies a story that never got old!) 😀
You can add ‘Honor’ to that list badtux. My Grandad and Mom taught me all of them. And I will honor them to the grave.
If you look at all the crap that Harry went through to get to Afghanistan, you can imagine the panic when the next in line wants to do something dangerous. William had to be satisfied with search and rescue until the Tories privatized it and eliminated his unit.
