Some People Get It

So the Treasury sets off a cavalcade of wingnut hissy fits by putting a Harriet Tubman on the $20 bill, which rather points out a basic problem as the man she is replacing is distinctly unloved for several of his actions in office. It would appear that any white man is preferable to a black woman.

Meanwhile in Canada, the post office celebrates the 50th anniversaries of Star Trek TOS by issuing a series of stamps featuring the lead characters.

There really isn’t much of interest in what the media chooses to report.

beam me onto a postage stamp, scotty! there’s no intelligent life down here! I didn’t know he was Canadian.

It would appear that any white man is preferable to a black woman.

isn’t that the truth. in fact, amongst a lot of the people where I live, there’s no “appear” about it, it’s manifest.

A lot of actors are, and TV shows that were once produced in the US are now shot in Canada. They take a few iconic exterior shots of major US city that are cut in, but if you know what to look for you will recognize Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, etc. I can often spot the Canadian license plates.

The New York Times is being sued for discrimination and their defense is that their “staff reflects the diversity of their readership and advertisers”. Of course the problem is that they identify their readership as young, affluent, white males, which does not offer a lot of diversity.

Lot of US films are shot in Aus & NZ also, including some big budget films such as Avatar, Wolverine, Star Wars, The Great Gatsby, The Matrix, Mission Impossible 2, Ghost Rider, Happy Feet, Babe, Finding Nemo… and over 200 others. 🙂 Partly because of the locations, but also a good pool of talent for crew & actors. And of course, cheaper. LOL We also have some excellent production & post production facilities, and one of the best graphics design & 3D animation studios in the World. I designed their render farm, server systems & workstations. Cut production time down by over 60%. Was also about half the cost of the specialty produced systems from the USA. So, they can easily under cut the US competitors whilst guaranteeing faster and better delivery. It’s only thanks to that job I was able to buy all the stuff I have the past year. Think I need to get another one of those jobs soon. 😉 Problem is, I can’t use them as a reference site or give any specifics. That industry is ultra competitive, so restrictive NDA’s are the norm. But, they do pay well! *shrug*

Most of the fantasy movies and TV shows rely on the NZ ‘outback’ for locations. Anywhere but the US is pretty much the order from the accounting department.

After the Silicon Graphics monopoly fell, everyone went with proprietary CGI systems which are nearly identical except every one of them seem to have some things that they do better than anyone else. The arty types decided they weren’t going to fall into the background as happened with old school animation.
