The Supremes Get Real

In a 6-2 decision they ruled that domestic abusers can lose their gun-ownership rights and in a 5-3 decision they said that Texas wasn’t fooling anyone about
the purpose of their latest abortion law.

In the gun case the individual admitted he beat up his girlfriend, but felt that since he did it a fit of rage, rather than being a planned attack, that shouldn’t prevent him from having a gun available the next time he got mad. While that is not a quote, read his brief. That is essentially what he claimed.

The problem for Texas was that they have records of the debates in the legislature.

I began my career as a contract IT guy with a job for the local Planned Parenthood, their first political database. The choice wasn’t accidental on my part, and I regret that I’ve deteriorated to the point where all I can give them is an occasional few bucks. What they give back, directly to the entire female population of America and indirectly to the rest of us, can’t be overestimated: how much is control of one’s life worth to every woman who, without Planned Parenthood, might very well not have that control? IMHO it’s priceless, and the irony is that there is an army of anti-choice, anti-contraception activists (that’s too polite a term, but hey, I’ve already cut loose my profanity for the day) trying relentlessly to deprive them of that control.

My first thought was that the ruling would have gone the same way if Scalia were alive, only 5-4. My second thought was no, Scali-wag would have browbeaten Kennedy into voting against women’s interests, not for the first time. I hope the Devil provided Antonin, invisible, with a ringside seat to the debate.

Kennedy has always been a bit flaky, and is the deciding vote in a lot of decisions. It is easier for him to do the right thing without Tony around.
