Le Tour 2019 – Stage 14

Tour de FranceTarbes > Tourmalet Barèges

Distance: 117.5 kilometers.

Another “mountain” stage, this time real mountains with a summit finish. The first to the summit gets the “Souvenir Jacques Goddet” prize, €5,000. Alaphilippe won it last year.

  • Côte de Labatmale 18 km (cat 4: 1.4km @ 6.7%)
  • Col du Soulor 60.5 km (cat 1: 11.9km @ 7.8%)

Thibaut Pinot won the stage and the €5K. Movistar moved back into first among the teams. Egan Bernal is back in the White Jersey. Julian Alaphilippe is still in Yellow and gained 36 seconds over Geraint Thomas. Alaphilippe might be the first French winner of the Tour in 34 years.

Note: Wikipedia has a simple article on the Mountain classification used on the Tour. The basic fact is that climbs fall into five types, with the four numbered types decreasing in difficulty as the numbers get larger, and then there is the Hors Catégorie, literally “without category”, which generally makes you look for an elevator or Sherpas.

Go to the CATEGORIES drop-down box below the CALENDAR and select “Le Tour” for all of the posts related to the race on this site.
