Paraskavedekatriaphobia

Yes, it’s Friday the 13th again. The 13th falls on a Friday more than any other day of the week, so get over it. It’s only valid in in English and Portuguese speaking countries, so go visit a Spanish-speaking neighborhood for the day.

If you want to blame someone, it’s the calendar of Pope Gregory XIII that created this imbalance. [He obviously didn’t have a problem with the number on any day.]

In Memoriam

September 11th, 2001

NYC, VA, PA

In the intervening 18 years we have spent hundreds of billions of dollars, trampled on peoples rights, created huge new government bureaucracies, and can’t respond as well as the third world to a natural disaster.

It seems like we are constantly being told that every new group that appears anywhere is capable of another 9/11 attack, so what is the point if we are no safer?

Richard Clarke: “Your government failed you. Those entrusted with protecting you failed you. And I failed you. We tried hard. But that doesn’t matter, because we failed. And for that failure, I would ask, once all the facts are out, for your understanding and for your forgiveness.

Ding Dong Bolton’s Gone

Trump tweets that he fired Bolton, but Bolton says he had already resigned: John Bolton OUT: ‘You Can’t Fire Me, I Quit’ Given Trump’s “Cowardly Lion” impersonation every time anyone leaves, this is the first time I have ever agreed with John Bolton about anything – Trump is a bully and doesn’t have the courage to fire anyone.

Digby highlights an All In with Chris Hayes episode featuring David Frum analyzing Trump’s Camp David “Afghanistan peace talks”. Frum’s analysis of the event makes a lot of sense. The last thing Bolton wants in the Middle East is peace talks that don’t follow unconditional surrender.

Trump is trying to create some resume items for his re-election campaign. It the same reason he is violating norms to get something built that he can claim is a wall.
