Nothing Going On

It’s amazing how little is actually going on in the world outside of Nairobi.

Elections in Australia and Germany have produced unsurprising results, although they were both bad for the countries involved. Either the polling companies are getting their process down to a real science, or people are actually telling them the truth for a change.

The US House did the totally predictable thing in their push to claim a mandate they don’t have and will probably shut down the government and then go on to renege on US bonds because they think they run things. It makes me want to know how many House members are shorting T-Bills and stand to make a lot of money off the ultimate in insider trading schemes.

The guests are leaving tomorrow, so things will head back to normal, whatever that is.

“… or people are actually telling them the truth for a change.”
😆 Yeah! My money is on that one. 😉

I hope you had a good time with your guest’s m8. 🙂

And yes “… whatever that is.” Indeed! If you ever find out, be sure to share huh? 😉 😀

I’ve just uploaded a test WP site to my server for testing, and probable changes. So, I’m moving forward, which I guess is something! 😉 😀

Oh! Some news I received you might find interesting (including a couple surprises!) 😉 :

Improved E-Rate gathers allies

If they started paying their CEOs what they are actually worth, the backbone companies could expand their fiber networks. They have the money, they just won’t spend it for the future of their companies. Short term thinking is pushing us into Third World status.

That 4Mb broadband standard is a premium option down here. You can only get it from the cable company, and you have to have premium TV service to receive it. Cable bills approach mortgage payments down here, and they wonder why so many people pull the plug and sign up for Netflix DVD service.

It looks like the telecom companies are trying to eat their cake and have it too. If eRate pays to expand broadband to all those rural schools and libraries, that’ll mean that they have a fiber backbone in those rural areas and can expand high speed Internet connectivity to those communities for “free”.

On the other hand, this is one case where I’m willing to accept the fact that we’re subsidizing the telecom companies to do what market forces fail to force them to do. Satellite Internet sucks so bad that it really isn’t a good option in those rural areas, and the telecoms are for-profit businesses and there’s no profit in expanding their backbones to those areas — unless eRate pays them to do so.

So maybe you’ll be getting real high speed Internet after all, Bryan :).

We have plenty of fiber, they just won’t sell it to ‘little people’. The cable company owns the eRate contract service and are making a mint, so they certainly don’t want any competition.

Down here the cable system loses the channels that they pull off the satellites when it rains heavily, so that’s another drawback of a satellite system, even if it wasn’t as expensive as it is.
