Nelson Has Always Been A DINO

Before the election I made it clear that I wouldn’t vote for Bill Nelson. The choice between Nelson and Harris was a choice between the seventh and eighth levels of hell. Nelson is, was, and always will be a Democrat in name only. He has supported the loss of civil liberties and welfare for corporations every chance he had.

He isn’t a stupid man, he knows exactly what he’s doing, and he does it because he benefits. His vision of the world is as close minded as any neocon, but he’s intelligent enough not to say it out loud.

When the Pensacola Beach Blog reports on Nelson’s Torture Vote, my personal response is that this is perfectly consistent with Nelson’s entire career in the Senate.

Nicole Belle at Crooks and Liars calls him a Liebercrat, but Lieberman used to be a Democrat, Nelson never was.

Nelson isn’t a conservative; he is just as radical as the rest of the Gingrich Repubs.

I agree that Bill Nelson should take a more progressive stance on economic issues (Nelson’s votes for free trade agreements and the bankruptcy bill were certainly sellouts) but he was right about the national security issue debated in the Senate Intelligence Committee last week. We cannot tie the hands of our intelligence agencies and win the war on terrorism. Most Americans are far more worried about being safe from a terrorist attack than the rights of supected terrorists. They don’t even mind if the government is snooping on terror rings which just prevented the bombing of JFK airport. If we Democrats come across as soft on terrorism, we are going to lose – it’s that simple.

If we don’t stand by the Constitution there’s nothing worth winning.

Read some damn history! Torture does not work! It didn’t work for the Soviets in Afghanistan; it didn’t work for the French in Algeria, it didn’t work for Nazi Germany. It doesn’t work, and if you resort to it you make more enemies.

All of the “terrorists” that have been rounded up lately have been located by standard police procedure. It works.

The people who lost Osama bin Laden in Tora Bora because they decided to attack another country have no room to talk about being soft on terrorism.

You cannot enforce the law by breaking it. You cannot stop terrorism by becoming a terrorist.
