A sad day. 🙁 I was hoping McGoohan would make an appearance in the new miniseries on AMC. (The original series full episodes are available on the AMC site btw).
Wrath of Kahn is my favorite Star Trek Movie. I notice the news stories keep mentioning Fantasy Island. I had forgotten about that! Ricardo Montalban will always be Kahn to me.

I even remember the original Khan episode. He really made Shatner look like a wimp. He never really did anything on Fantasy Island.
He was John Drake in the series “Secret Agent Man” [called “Danger Man” in the UK], with the Johnny Rivers song, the theme for the series, before he was Number Six. I was sort of surprised he wasn’t tapped to be the original James Bond.
…tonight I’m seeing the “riiiich Corinthian leather” of a college classmate’s Dodge Cordova in my mind’s eye while hearing Hervé Villechaize shouting “Da Plane! Da Plane!” at a Grumman Widgeon and Johnny Rivers singing “Secret Agent Man” in my head. I can’t explain any of this, except as examples of my unfortunate travels along the forgotten backroads of American culture…

Yeah! A very sad day! 🙁 I have the original Prisoner series on DVD, and still watch it from time to time, and discover something new each time!
And… I liked Fantasy Island! Very strange because I don’t normally like things like that! But Mr. Roarke and Tattoo had a chemistry and worked really well together! They made me laugh often. I still have those silly words echoing in my head… “Smiles, everyone… smiles! “, and of course (from Tattoo) “Da plane. Da plane. !” 😀
And Khan… yeah. Great actor.
Bryan, a dead fish can make Shatner look like a wimp. Bah!

It is a bit odd for me, because I wasn’t even in a position to see television for a major portion of my life, and never really developed the habit. Most of what I saw, I saw while visiting my parents on leave until I got out of the Air Force. I saw most of the television I ever watched while working shifts in law enforcement and tuning in the odd channels on cable in Rochester, NY during the non-primetime hours and watching reruns. The Prisoner was on the local PBS station after the “Britcoms”.
They may not have been the biggest names, but it is obvious they had a following.
Montalban and McGoohan gone… sigh. Both gentlemen were shining examples of the actor’s craft, and proof that TV at its best need not be a “vast wasteland.” May both of them R.I.P.
(How did Shatner ever end up in a macho role in the first place, let alone several such roles? I know of no one, woman or man, who thinks he looks or acts the part.)

The original show was relatively low budget – Shatner may have been the right size for the costume, or he knew Roddenberry.
Nahhh. Shatner was cheap and has an ego and libido the size of the moon. He probably offered to work for free when he found out the *girls* would be wearing tight little uniforms and he’d get to ‘be up close and personal’ with them. He’s not an actor BTW. A person is only an actor when he’s *acting*, you see? When a person is simply being themselves… then they are simply themselves. 😉
Still sad about McGoohan and Montalban passing on. *sigh* Still, I hope they have found peace now. They were true actors and as Steve said, masters of their craft.

I liked him in Boston Legal. He got to play himself, Denny Crain. Call me nutty, but I enjoyed watching it.

The Shat is a hoot. Practically a parody of himself after his turn in Star Trek, and never much of an actor, but he lucked into a low-budget show that made him one of those iconic figures and good-naturedly ran with it.
McGoohan and Montalban, on the other hand, were pros.

I caught the obits for McGoohan. I loved the Prisoner, although I didn’t see it until it was repeated in the late 70s.. I was only 4 when it was shown here first. Danger Man was before my time.
I didn’t catch teh Montalban obits. the Space Seed episode of Star Trek was excellent
BTW McGoohan was offered the James Bond and Somon Templar roles and turned them both down.. Sean Connery and Roger Moore were very happy men!

Boston Legal must be something current, so I haven’t seen it. Shatner always reminded me of someone being really earnest in a high school production of Shakespeare … except the play was Our Town. He is easy to parody, however.
McGoohan was a great villain in many roles, and was probably concerned with typecasting to forswear 007 and the Saint. Connery really did play McGoohan, including the hat.
I’ve got a soft spot for Shatner as James Tiberius although I do love TNG and DS9. I suppose it was because I grew up with the original Enterprise. it was first shown here when I was 6 or 7 and has been repeated time and time again

I loved the show, it was him I had a problem with, but then I was a military brat and wasn’t very impressed with his “command style”.

He makes the typical 3rd rate Hollywood ham look like an actor. LOL 😉
Nurse Christine Chapel had a lot more style and ability than Shatner. Then again, so does a pot plant. LOL
She’s gone too (Majel Barrett Roddenberry, RIP). 🙁 *sigh* See… the good ones *DO* go too soon (perhaps not young, but before those who don’t deserve to last so long IMHO).
