Happy Solstice

snowflakeAt 11:30 PM CST the winter solstice occurs marking the longest night of the year. If everyone has been good, the days start getting longer tomorrow. Locally, the sun will rise at 6:38AM and set at 4:49PM for a total of 10 hours and 10 minutes of daylight, but tomorrow will be a whole 2 seconds longer.

This also marks HogWatch, so don’t forget to put out the turnips.

I am decorating my Jeep with evergreen branches as we speak, evergreen branches (or entire trees) being a symbol of the rebirth of the year long-predating Christianity on this most holy of days, when the day quits dying and starts growing again. Well, actually they’re plastic “Christmas” wreaths zip-tied to the grill and spare tire on the rear tailgate, but same difference, right?

Add some holly and mistletoe to include the Celts in the Teuton celebration. I would avoid the mushroom and dead bird traditional decorations, as they attract flies and cops.

Anyone who thinks there are flocks in the fields around Bethlehem at this time of year has been oversampling the mushrooms. It is cold around there, too cold to have your sheep and goats out grazing for nothing in the snow.

The good news is that Belobog [white god] defeats Chernobog [black god] and the sun is reborn, but it only lasts for six months.
