Hickox – 2 Governors – 0

Maine’s governor LePage just learned what New Jersey’s governor Christie was shown – don’t mess with the red-head.

The BBC reports: No forced quarantine for nurse Kaci Hickox

A judge in the US has ruled in favour of a nurse fighting a state quarantine order since returning from treating Ebola patients in West Africa.

Judge Charles LaVerdiere ruled Kaci Hickox did not need to be isolated or restricted in her movements because she is not showing symptoms of the virus.

She was ordered to monitor her health, which she has been doing all along. She is a professional and knows about Ebola. If she does discover a symptom of any kind, she will go to a hospital immediately because she knows that’s how you recover from the disease.

My Mom was an Irish red head. My dad found out the painful way what happens when you try to take out your anger on one when I was a kid. He tried to slap her in the kitchen, and she grabbed a fry pan off the stove and hit him on the side of the head so hard, it knocked him out. She threw cold water over him and when he came too, she said next time she’d kill him. It wasn’t a threat. My maternal Grandfather was a decorated veteran of 2 World Wars and mu Mom learned you never threaten and you keep your word, always. 🙂 I’ve always been so proud of my Mom! My father, on the other hand, not so much. He was a bully and coward, but smart enough to know never to try that again. *shrug* Happy families.

Anyway, nice to see there are still some sane judges in the USA. I never cease to be amazed.

Ebola is a terrible disease, but it isn’t easy to catch and most people already have what is necessary to kill it in their houses – chlorine bleach or very hot water. That is the basic flaw in these quarantine cases – a person isn’t infectious unless they have symptoms and the virus is in body fluids, not the air. Health care workers catch it because they have to deal with the body fluids of patients, not because they are in the room.

In the Maine case there was the problem that judges like professional opinions when it comes to cases like this and Ms Hickox has the most current scientific information in the state on the treatment of Ebola. Judges don’t like to be reversed on appeal, and the red-head was going to appeal until she won. She was right, knew she was right, and intended to stand on her rights.

Badtux said it – people willing to volunteer to risk an Ebola infection are not going to frightened by pompous posturing politicians.
