Iditarod 2017 – Day 7

Iditarod 2017 MapSled DogRyan Anderson (8) scratched at Galena with 10 puppies in harness. This is bad news for Ellen Halverson as she gets back the Red Lantern and she has no need for a third one as she is already in the record book as the only person to receive two.

The preliminary report on the death of the dog Smoke during transport indicates that overheating is the probable cause of death.

The Mushers in bold are former winners of the Iditarod, while italics indicates Yukon Quest winners. The numbers in parentheses are their Bib numbers. The small “R” indicates a total rookie, while the small “Q” indicates an Iditarod rookie who has completed a Yukon Quest.

These are the official standings. That means they are official, not that they are correct. Things jump around a lot as people decide to update the standings. This problem is especially bad in the back of the pack, as no one bothers to update those standings when the lead is changing.

This post will be updated during the day, and the map changed on all posts to reflect the current situation.

All posts on the Iditarod can be seen by selecting “Iditarod” from the Category box on the right sidebar or clicking on the Sled Dog graphic.

So sad that there have been two dogs that died! I read that Smoke died on the plane itself as he was being transported, and they are investigating why the plane would have overheated this way.

Just too awful for those teams…

Aircraft heating systems are damn hard to control. They were talking about a large number of dogs, so it must have been a cargo aircraft and not a typical 6-passenger or smaller bush plane. They use waste engine heat, like your car, so it was probably comfortable for people, but too hot for sled dogs. People can take off coats, but the dogs don’t have that option.
