I think I might understand why the FSB picked up Paul Whelan:

Embassies of several countries are trying to assist ex-U.S. Marine Paul Whelan as he remains in a Moscow prison over allegations of espionage. Whelan was born in Canada and has since gained citizenship in the U.S., Britain and Ireland.
The professional paranoids in every country get upset when they encounter people with more than one passport. Citizenship in 4 countries while involved in the “security” business sets off alarms. He would definitely be pulled aside entering the US if they saw more than one passport [been there- tourist & official duty].
I’m not saying that he has done anything wrong, but the arrest may be more than the typical kidnapping to exchange for Mariya Butina.

The hilarious thing is that Paul Whelan is a right-wing Putin worshiping Trump supporter who made videos extolling Russia and encouraging people to do business in Russia. How’s that for being hoist upon one’s own petard!
And on a less serious note: Florida tourism officials note that foreign tourism has declined by nearly 10% over the past six years. Clearly something has to be done to revive Florida’s moribund economy. So I have a modest proposal: Market it like a zoo.
“Come to Florida! See Florida Man and Florida Woman in their natural environment! Goggle at Florida Man running through a convenience store with an alligator! Be astonished by the naked woman screaming in her car! Watch Florida Woman hold up a postal service worker at gunpoint and then make her escape on a tricycle!” Etc.
Let’s face it, with foreign tourism having taken a dive since Trump took office because of orders to be hard on foreigners in order to keep possible terrorists out, Florida needs to do *something* to revive their moribund economy. Marketing what they have in abundance — Florida Man and Florida Woman — might just do the trick!
Florida tourism has been in trouble beginning the visa changes under George W. Bush, then the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, followed by all of the various bans put in place by Trump. The crazy is being concentrated by the lack of new blood, and 8 years of Batboy as the governor. The new governor is worthless and incompetent.

Maybe a miracle will happen & he may consider that Supporting Russia & POTUS Dumbarse was a mistake. But I doubt it. he’ll probably blame Obama & Hillary.
There’s a good piece in Slate about his background & his Court-Martial. Can’t believe this conman was ever a Marine! Standards have definitely fallen.

This guy sounds like another grifter like Paul Manafort, who was trying to create another money making opportunity for himself. How in hell did he get hired for anything in the security field with a bad conduct discharge? Why are we trying to get him back? Sounds like sooner or later he was going to end up in a US, UK, Canadian, and/or Irish prison. Let the Russians pick up the costs. 👿
