New York attorney general files lawsuit to dissolve the National Rifle Association:
(CNN) — New York Attorney General Letitia James announced she will attempt to dissolve the National Rifle Association, accusing its senior leadership of violating laws governing non-profit groups, using millions from the organization’s reserves for personal use and tax fraud.
In a news release Thursday morning, James, a Democrat, alleged that current and former NRA leadership “instituted a culture of self-dealing mismanagement” benefiting themselves, family, friends and favored vendors, leading the organization to lose more than $63 million in three years.
“The NRA’s influence has been so powerful that the organization went unchecked for decades while top executives funneled millions into their own pockets,” James said in the news release.
The NRA was chartered as a non-profit in New York State, so it is subject to the laws of New York State. Trump’s charity had to shut down for similar reasons.
The organization has been suffering hard times after the feud between then president Oliver North and VP-forever Wayne LaPierre went public. As usual LaPierre won, but then internal documents began leaking.
They used to be about safety and conservation, but then shifted to representing weapons manufacturers, rather than their members and became lobbyists.

Awesome! I hope it will happen. If nothing else, the MAGA’ts & GOPT will become even more insane that they already are. Maybe even their heads will explode.
The people complaining about other nonprofits doing the same sort of thing miss the fact that New York State only has power over those nonprofits chartered in the state. That’s why most of the new cons are incorporated in states like Florida. Trump’s nonprofit and the NRA were founded in New York, so they are being judged by the laws of New York.
They just did it to Trump’s fake charity, so the NRA is on the same downward slide. They could have saved themselves by backing Oliver North and cleaned up their act, but LaPierre probably had too much dirt of the members of the Board of Directors for any of them to do the decent and legal thing.

You’re right – Trump tried the same crap with the governor of New York because Cuomo’s briefings were getting better ratings on TV than Trump’s. Trump missed the clue that Cuomo was relaying information from medical experts and not making it up by listening to the drunks in his favorite pub.
The GOP doesn’t believe in COVID-19 or science. unfortunately COVID-19 doesn’t care what you believe. C-19 is an unbiased, apolitical, amoral virus that will infect everything it can in order to survive. Darwin explained it to people a long time ago but some people refuse to believe it.

and marksmanship, which is how i became a crack shot with a rifle (and bow and arrow) as a kid – i never formally joined the organization but i did accidentally get interested in riflery (and then archery) as a result of somehow ending up in some nra-approved activity one summer. i turned out to be pretty good at both of these and i hate what has happened to the organization that got me there. yay for new york state!!
i didn’t get into skeet shooting or target shooting with handguns until i moved east. i never got very much into either of these, probably because by that time the nra had been taken over by the nutcases. or maybe the people here in the east were already nutcases, who knows? 😈
My Dad was a member in high school ( his high school in New York had a rifle club) and was a firearms instructor at his AFROTC postings at Syracuse and Colgate universities. I scored NRA shooting awards in the Scouts and military.
There has always been a tradition of hunting in upstate New York, but the NRA decided to work for Colt and Glock instead of shooters and hunters.
so maybe just the people in the southeast then… although even here in the east, both south and north, most of the people i went out shooting with were into hunting (and fishing) because they otherwise would have had trouble putting food on the table. and because of that, i’ve always wondered just how many of these really nutty gun-nuts are better-off, financially, and just plain LOVE GUNS (and the associated idea of being to kill anything they want, whenever they want).
There are a lot of people in the Northeast who depend on that deer for protein in the Winter. They eat what they hunt. You had a bolt action deer rifle and a shotgun for ducks.
What is the point of a .223 for anything but varmints. You lose a lot of meat taking down a deer with an AR-15, and a 12 gauge is a better defensive weapon. The 1903 Springfield and the Garand weren’t rare in the field because they knocked down a white tail, but the current military rifles don’t make the cut.
There are people who love and hoard guns. I’ve always looked on them as tools. Rare and beautifully engraved weapons might be worth the investment, but pseudo-assault rifles don’t make the cut.
