SOTU Update:

The transcript may say “Democratic”, but the Shrubbery said “Democrat”. The hateful spirit of Joe McCarthy still exists in the language of the Republican Party.

The word is spelled and pronounced “NUCLEAR”.

The accent is on the second syllable in both “IRAQ” and “IRAN” and the initial vowel is short.

Dr. Cole would be happy to explain the relationship of the various Muslim groups in the Middle East, because it is glaringly obvious that no one in the White House has a clue.

Update: Look, you stupid twit, buy a dictionary – McCain’s escalation is a tactic, not a strategy. You don’t have a strategy, which is one of the big problems with your war.

Update 2: Oh, the civilian reserve idea, it’s called the Peace Corps, and it has been around since Kennedy. Look in your government phone book and you can call and ask them about what they do.

Sigh. Has there ever before been such an embarrassing occupant of our highest office?

Back when I was a student at Rice, some wag was always rearranging the letters on a sign, identifying one building as “Bonner UNCLEAR Lab.” AFAIK, Junior Bush never attended Rice, though his daddy spoke at a commencement sometime in the last 10 years. No, I did not hear his speech; I was too busy setting up and tuning a harpsichord for a paid job playing a reception at one of the residential colleges. How sad that I missed the speech. 🙂 But neither Poppy nor Junior ever knew anything about working for pay, either. I suppose we just didn’t run in the same crowd.

William Schwenk Gilbert wrote of someone who hoped to “… know more of tactics than a novice in a nunnery.” Do you think he was prescient?

Bryan,

Your live blogging of the SOTU ceremonial sun dance is like a fine wine… better and better as it ages.

I accidentally heard most of it as the radio was on and it was too much of an aggravation removing the cat from my lap to get up and turn it off. There were certain things that just jarred and I’m hoping writing then will dispel them from my memory, where they have been festering since last night.

Most of these are affectations, because he occasionally gets them right in unscripted moments at the few press events he has given. As you know, John, JEB doesn’t sound anything like the Shrubbery and he attended UTexas, not Yale.
