Move Along Big Doggies

Flag of the Yukon Flag of Alaska

Sled DogOne thousand miles From Whitehorse, Yukon to Fairbanks, Alaska on the Goldrush/mail route – the Yukon Quest.

Here’s the official site, and the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner site.

Only a quarter of century old, the start alternates between Whitehorse [odd years] and Fairbanks. Lance Mackey who has won the Quest for the last four years and doubled by winning the Iditarod the last two, has pulled out of this year’s race, but there are plenty of first rate teams in the running, including Lance’s brother, Jason.

I think you may have to wait until the race starts. These guys aren’t as polished as the Iditarod crew, but the timing and route are easier on the dogs. I think there are probably going to be heat problems when the Iditarod starts in three weeks.

i found 4 or 5 sites with the nomecam embedded, 1 or 2 of which also had the current weather conditions… 32 degrees in nome at 5pm this afternoon.

Nome is way over on the coast, this thing is in the interior, but 32° at Nome in the middle of February is not a good omen for the Iditarod.

I checked and they haven’t updated the map from last year. The Daily News-Miner works at its own pace.

Whitehouse is currently a balmy -9°, but it could get up to +5° for the start of the race late tomorrow local.

It is relatively warm in Fairbanks at 9° and is forecast to have a high of 20° on Monday, but then things return to normal with daytime highs of 0° for the rest of the week. There is a lot of snow in the forecast.
