The Font of the Lore

If you get old enough you are are considered wise, apparently because you have lived a long time. It doesn’t actually work like that, but, as Badtux keeps reminding us, half of all people are below average. This means when the younger folks need instruction in ancient traditions you are the first person called.

So it was on Saturday evening when a young tenant called in a bit of a panic and asked “Do you how to tie a tie?” The guy is in his in his early 30s and works in hospitality, but has forgotten how to do it.

I couldn’t just direct him to a web site, because data charges are outrageous, so he came over and I showed him how to tie the Windsor knot. I recommended that he not wear flip-flops.

I just can’t imagine an adult male who can’t tie a tie.

Me, me, me, me and damn proud of it. And I will not wear the clip-on either.

I can even do bow ties, although it has been a while since I wore a tuxedo. I once shopped in London for my suits, so there.

LOL

I used to own a lot of suit’s (2 & 3 piece), ties &amp (including a couple bow ties for formals); shirts. Even had cuff links & tie pins then, & a couple signet rings. Silk Handkerchiefs for the suit pocket… All the *required* accessories. 😉 😀 LOL I just remembered I even had a cravat!

I only have 2 suits now, for *just in case*, and 4 or 5 ties. 🙂 I got a half dozen pure Egyptian cotton double-stitched custom shirts & a few suits from London. I kept 3 shirts & 1 suit. Kept 2 silk ties (1 was my *lucky* red *power tie* that I wore to meetings when I knew there would be a’holes present that need to be intimidated.) 😉 😀

The good old days! Well, kinda. I always hated meetings! Most were a waste of my time. The Military was simpler. At least the meetings (briefings) had a point & were as brief as possible. Sure, people were usually trying to kill me. But they weren’t trying to talk me to death!

My husband was gone, my son had a high school dance, so there was a panicked run across the street to the neighbor who knew how to tie a tie…..

Mostly wool, and generally three-piece, but I shopped at Carnaby Street as well as a Savile Row shop, so I had a cashmere blend gold and black houndstooth check Edwardian suit among the pinstripes and dark blues and greys. YSL, Cardin … I once spent a lot of money on clothes. These days it is one dark blue suit worn with a black tie for funerals, alas.

Ellroon, moms are supposed to know how to do all of these things … backwards on someone else 😉

😀 My mom taught me how to knot a tie. I had to wear a tie as part of the uniform for primary school & college (they were private schools.) Granddad showed me how to tie a bow.

So… Carnaby St! Fond memories. 😀 One of my uncle’s in England introduced me to his “Gentleman’s Taylor” Peckham Rye. I think (from memory) they were founded just before the start of the 19th Century (1799 maybe). He regaled me with stories. One of the owners (Charlie – I forget the surname) had served with my Grandfather in the Welsh Fusiliers, which was handy as I garnered a nice discount. 🙂 Their work was simply stunning! They even created a silk tie (which I still have) to compliment the 2 *work* 3-piece suits & shirts for my work in the UK & USA. Red crosshatch patterned base with blue & silver white diagonal stripes. 🙂 They introduced me to a Cobbler & Milliner nearby for the required foot & head accessories. LOL Most comfortable shoes I ever owned! I’m not sure what happened to the two hat’s I had made… *shrug* Lost in time I guess. 🙂

Though, Carnaby Street is more famous for it’s trendy Mod styles worn by many famous musicians & followers (those that had the money). 🙂

Memories… I couldn’t even afford a tailored shirt today! Back then, I was earning AU$800 to AU$1,800 a day. *shrug* The ATO made a decent fortune off me during the late 80’s : late 90’s.

I did my shopping in the late 60s and early 70s. When I came down here my Mother had a fit when I shipped her a trunk with 50 white dress shirts. The problem was I took care of my clothes and rotated through a large number so I had tee shirts older than most of the tenants.

I have since lost weight and have gotten rid of most of my clothes from that era.
