Dydd Gŵyl Dewi Sant

flag of Wales

flag of St. David

It’s Saint David’s Day, and, as he is their patron saint, it is a national holiday in Wales. The Welsh wear leeks or daffodils [called Peter’s leek in Welsh] on this day.

(Been mostly AWOL the past couple weeks. Just a tweet now & then).

My Nan, who was Welsh, used to tell stories when i was a boy. Some funny… Some just weird! 🤔

Did you see that Hurricanes are now happening above our atmosphere? 😳

I hope everyone is well! At least it seems POTUS Biden & his team are moving ahead. makes a nice change.

space hurricanes! that’s just plain cool! (i’ve been fascinated by space weather for years). hi, kryten!

We have located the tunnel and can actually see a glow at the other end. As there is no evidence of railroad tracks we can now assume that for the next 2 years things will be better. Competence in a US government is refreshing after TFG (The Former Guy / He who cannot be named).

The Welsh suffer from a lack of vowels, but they do produce great singers and less great coal. They honor music and poetry, which I favor over war.

Why not “space hurricanes” ? We were running short of new natural disasters at ground level. OTOH it will certainly raise hell with Arctic communications and the satellites in geosynchronous over the North Pole.

Hiya hipparchia!👋🥰 I love all things Sciency or Spacey… 😉 😀 I even finally decided to pay for a Medium annual subscription because there are several good science writers there I wanted to follow.

I like that analogy Bryan. 👍😊

That article came from a free online science/news newsletter I subscribed to called The Futurist. They send me an eMail daily with highlights. It’s been well worth it the past few months. And it is FREE!

https://www.getthefuturist.com/

I also subscribe to another free newsletter: “The Morning Brew” & their sibling “Emerging Tech Brew” to see what’s happening in the Tech World and who’s trying to screw, take over, sell off what companies! Like this article today… You should maybe sit down Bryan. It’s about Rubio and Amazon. But I won’t spoil it! (And no cheating by looking at the link!) 😉 😆

Marco Rubio & Amazon

As always, I hope you are both doing well! And that you can take some time to relax. You’ve certainly earned it!

OT: Oh. Bryan… I meant to tell you something that may surprise you, given that you know what I think of HP and the usually crap consumer products!

I had to buy a new Mouse… A few years ago, I began hearing that HP had decided to get serious about some high-end peripherals and were… actually winning awards! I thought someone was pulling my leg… But it turned out to be accurate! Color me surprised! And recently, they announced that they are buying out the Kingston HyperX high end peripherals brand. Everything except DRAM and SSD’s and their components production (DRAM, NAND etc).

I found a very good deal on amazon, and after reading several reviews from sources I trust, decided to get it. Mainly because the local suppliers shipping is crap (took me three bloody weeks to get a KB from a Melbourne supplier I used for many years, 180 km from me!) I ordered from Amazon Thursday, they shipped it Friday & the tracking say’s I should have it Wednesday! And shipping was free (would have cost me AU$20 from Melb. Another reason!) AND… It was cheaper! Usually AU$129, discounted to AU$68! So… As much as I despise Amazon as a company… I’d have been a fool to not take it. 😼

https://www.amazon.com.au/HP-2VP02AA-ABL-Reactor-Mouse/dp/B07D9625PJ

here’s a review (I had to laugh because the MAIN con for it was the LED’s “didn’t stand out”! Geez… I suppose the reviewers have to pander to their mostly moronic “bling-bling over function” readers. 🤷‍♂️🤦‍♂️

I really liked the concept of the adjustable palm wrest rear part of the mouse. It’s a problem I’ve had with many with my large hands.👍😊

5 Bryan { 03.14.21 at 5:16 pm }

The Compaq deal and decline of quality that followed soured me on anything but HP printers. Corporate thinking destroys tech companies.

I like some Kingston products, so I guess I should buy them now before HP has a chance to screw things up.

If Florida voters wake up they will replace both of our Senators and our Governor. Rubio is just proving what a jerk he is.

6 Kryten42 { 03.14.21 at 7:07 pm }

Blimey!! I just got this eMail from Amazon about my mouse!

“Your package with HP OMEN Reactor Mouse… will be delivered today.”

I don’t remember anything being that fast before C19! Let alone now! 😮

7 Bryan { 03.14.21 at 8:59 pm }

Amazon has local warehouses everywhere and their own air force and trucks.

8 Kryten42 { 03.14.21 at 10:52 pm }

True… But when i ordered my new GFX card at the start of April from Amazon, it took a month. And that was direct air-freight from the Gigabyte warehouse. But given that stuff I order from 180km away takes a Month, and costs me an extra $20… Ehhhh… 🤷‍♂️😒

I just got an SMS my new HP mouse is on the way here.

And I found Kogan still have stock of my most favorite computer mouse ever that I bought in 2013 and it’s almost dead (kinda did a repair, but won’t last long). And it’s half what I paid then! I think I’m gonna cry!! Hmmph! Going to order one anyway! Need a backup given the crap World situation now! And it lasted about 8 years!

https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/acatana-gaming-mouse-usb-tesoro-gungnir-h5-purple-3500-dpi-7-buttons-for-pc-ts-h5-kgn/

Still don’t trust HP! Reviews be damned! 😟😒

9 Bryan { 03.14.21 at 11:15 pm }

Ah, yes, Amazon doesn’t stock everything on its site. I’m a Prime member and if it isn’t listed as a Prime item, it is coming from an associated business rather than an Amazon warehouse and involves the same problem as the store in Melbourne.

If IBM made a wireless keyboard with the AT era key switches I’d buy the noisy sucker in a second. I make due with Logitechs but they lack the travel, feel, and noise I trained on before being condemned to ASR-33 Teletypes.

HP has never recovered from the reign of Queen Carly.

10 Kryten42 { 03.14.21 at 11:32 pm }

Geez! “Queen Carly” i could hear your irony & satire drip from every letter! When I worked for HP in the mid 90’s… That’s not what anyone I knew called her!😒😠

Yeah, I’m Prime too. The HP mouse just arrived, 10 min’s after my grocery delivery! Good timing. 😀 It’s in an all black and red box! Must be fast! 🤣

You can get a KB with long travel switches and as *clicky* as you want them. Also with different key-press pressure, some have an initial higher activation pressure (like 50 to 60 g) then lower travel (25 to 45 g). It’s insane the options now! Of course… They cost a kidney and a lung! typically start around US$180 and go from there. I’ve seen some custom packages for pro gamer’s around $380! But the switches are guaranteed for 50 million key-presses!🤷‍♂️🙄 The popular and cheaper Cherry MX switches are only a paltry 20 million! And not as customizable, but they have been releasing new one to make up for that! There’s a real hidden war going on in the KB switch world right now! Seriously! I think it’s bloody hilarious honestly.🤣

I can send you some links if you are ever curious, or want a laugh at just how damned serious people take it all!

11 Kryten42 { 03.15.21 at 12:26 am }

OK… It’s only been 20 minutes… But I have to say, I am truly bloody impressed!! I seriously NEVER thought I would ever say that about an HP consumer product! If HP can do this… Why did they feel the need to by the HyperX brand?🤔 Just to whittle down the competition?🤔 I suspect so! A lot of people feel the same way about HP.

And that review, with it’s little whinge about the cable… It’s bloody marvelous! Really fine & flexible steel braid. It’ll never wear out and doesn’t tangle like the nylon crap (I tried!) Even little details like the manual I got being slim & in English only! When I got my crappy & expensive Razer mouse, the damned manual was heaver than the mouse and 2 cm thick! 38 languages! I’ve heard people saying “it’s to cut costs”! What utter BS! Tat much paper & weight increases costs & final price! Plus, I d/l the software… it’s small (Razer s/w was over 300 MB) and doesn’t nag like the Razer s/w constantly does!

The HP OMEN brand already has it’s own website… So yeah, I suspect buying HyperX was to cull the competition mainly.

12 Kryten42 { 03.15.21 at 7:21 am }

Ha! I knew there HAD to be a gotcha!

The mouse itself is good.

Unfortunately… the software needed to control it (set the button actions, fine tune the sensitivity & speed… etc.) can ONLY be d/l from the M$ Store site! M$ of course wants all your info & then asks me to give an eMail address to get updated information on the software and “other relevant information”. I do have a junk email address for that crap. But I just closed the message and nothing happened. So, tried again using the junk-mail address, expecting the usual “please verify the address with the sent eMail.” Nothing. After awhile, i found it was trying to interrogate my W10, apparently to verify it was legitimate! For bloody driver s/w for a mouse??! I decided “screw that” and asked on a few big PC forums I’m on, if anyone had it and could eMail it to me or knew where I could get it!

I still hate M$ AND HP! Screw them both! 👎🤬

I was buying HP equipment when I was in SoCal and did some work for their trade show loan office. They assumed net 45 days on my invoices, but cash up front on theirs. HP used third party drivers for their equipment after firing the group that used to write them to save money, so I had to locate drivers that worked or debug their drivers when clients bought the equipment from me. That’s why I’m not surprised you have to deal with M$ for the software. That situation was one of many ukazi from the pen of Queen Carly that affected my life and bottom line.

HP hardware and Microsoft software – what could go wrong 😈

14 Kryten42 { 03.19.21 at 1:31 am }

I got the tried and true Tesoro Gungnir mouse from Kogan. I’ll use that as my primary (I am used to it & have the s/w which is small, easy and uses almost no resources.) The HP/M$ s/w of course is bloated crap!

I think the HP will be my backup. I did find a design issue! They only use a single button behind the scroll wheel to change mouse speed! It’s easy to hit when using the wheel (like in FPS games, wheel changes weapon) and the mouse is hard to control! Takes 12 presses to cycle though the speeds! Good way to die! The Tesoro mouse has up/down buttons that are lower than the HP ones & only 5 speed steps.

Here… We all need a laugh! Have one on me…

I left a comment, of course! 😉 😀

Re the wax idol: I would have installed a wick and watched it burn. That is the only way he would have enlightened anything.

I had to research “Tesoro Gungnir”. I realize it’s a matter of latency but I really dislike extra cables. I’ll stay with Logis wireless rodents and use a neighbor’s XBox if the urge to game overcomes me. 😉
