Flag of Sark

The bureaucrats of the European Union have demanded that that Sark alter its entire governmental structure to conform to their rules. The fact that Michael Beaumont, the Seigneur of Sark, has been doing a pretty good job, and the 600 residents of the 3.5 square mile island didn’t complain about feudalism, makes no difference to the pencil pushers in Brussels, the island had to create a democratic government.

One thing you can be certain of is that the current tax burden, approximately $3.50 per year for the entire island, will go up.

Sark? I had no idea! That was fun to learn about, thanks!

There are all of these wonderful little isolated exceptions to the general madness of the world that often exist in close proximity to the “real world.” There are a lot of them on the small islands around Europe where it is possible to step back in time because the “advances” of the modern world simply can’t be easily adapted to fit in to local conditions.

It was a curious set up in Sark, a throw back to the 16th Cetury I think. THe Dame of Sark, the seigneur during WWII terrified the occupying germans!

The flag has Normandy as the canton of England, so you know it’s ancient, I think they said it was a grant from Elizabeth I, which would explain a total tax bill of around two pounds a year. We don’t have anything close on this side of the pond.

It could well be the idea behind Fenwick and Lancre.

Hmm I wonder if Sark will be another mouse that roared!

From what I heard on the radio they are going to have a problem remembering to be a government, much less roaring. It wasn’t exactly a an overwhelming endorsement of democracy by the locals.
