Proposed Florida License Plate

Florida Plate Blogging

While Sinfonian has a visceral reaction to this proposed new Florida plate, I take personal umbrage at the historical frauds it perpetuates – the only things that are “authentic” and actually deal with the “heritage” of Florida are the buttons on the bottom of the graphic.

The Problem is Partisan Politics…Oh, Wait

The Associated Press reports Feds say Southern water-sharing talks failed

WASHINGTON – Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne acknowledged Saturday that White House-brokered water negotiations among Alabama, Florida and Georgia have failed.

Without an agreement, the Army Corps of Engineers and other federal agencies will begin implementing a water-sharing plan of their own, Kempthorne said in a letter to the governors.

“Regrettably, it will necessarily be a solution being directed to the states instead of our much hoped for solution coming from the states,” he wrote in the letter, released Saturday.

No Power to the People

From the Miami Herald: Alvarez: No ‘criminal activity’ in power failure

Power outages cascaded through much of South Florida and many other parts of Florida Tuesday, causing major disruptions for millions of people around the region and the state.

Both nuclear reactors at FPL’s Turkey Point’s tripped off unexpectedly Tuesday — taking a plant that supplies power to more than 450,000 homes almost instantly off-line — though it wasn’t immediately clear what triggered the automatic shutdowns.

“We have reports that the nuclear unit scrammed [experienced unexpected shut downs], but we do not why at this point,” said Ken Clark, a spokesman for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s regional office in Atlanta.

The Associated Press reports that Man Dies After Shark Attack Off Fla. Coast

(AP) An Austrian tourist died Monday after being bitten by a shark while diving near the Bahamas in waters that had been baited with bloody fish parts to attract the predators.

A woman who answered the telephone at Scuba Adventures on Monday said the company had no comment.

The company’s Web site says it offers the opportunity to get “face to face” with sharks. The site explains that its hammerhead and tiger shark expeditions in the Bahamas are “unique shark trips … run exclusively for shark enthusiasts and photographers.”

Ancient Blog Shuts Down

After a decade Kenneth Quinnell is shutting down T. Rex’s Guide to Life to concentrate on his group blog, the Florida Progressive Coalition. In blog years the Guide to Life was Jurassic but the coming election has made trying to maintain the two blogs too much work.

Yet Another Opinion

Digby weighs in on the mess that is the Democratic Party candidate selection process in Democracy And Democrats.

I really wanted to like this, I did. Things were going so well and the situation in Florida was presented accurately for a change and then this:

In a campaign that looks like it’s going to cost a billion dollars, I think the money can be found to hold new primaries in both states. Since neither of the candidates campaigned in the first round neither should complain. It’s not cheap, but it’s doable. Chris Bowers (who also believes that supedlegates [sic] should represent their constituents) suggests that the Florida delegates should be seated as is and offers some solid reasons as to why that makes sense. But since legitimacy is a problem with this whole thing and I’ve heard talk of “marching in the streets all the way to Denver” I think we can assume that seating those delegates in a way that would tip the results is a non-starter. So, I’m for a new election. It’s not that difficult.

She doesn’t see the problem. We’ll just wave a wand and have an election. Everyone will be happy.

Ignorance Is Not An Excuse

Sinfonian of Blast Off! covers the latest attempt to paper over the mess created by the Democratic National Committee rules in the real world.

I’ve covered some of this before, but let me expand a little.

“A number of people have been lumping Florida and Michigan together because both states moved their primaries and the Democratic National Committee took away all of the delegates from both states. The situations are not the same.”

That is what is known as a fact. The two cases are similar only in that the primary dates occurred before February 5th.

The Numbers

The Division of Elections says there are 10,203,112 registered voters in Florida. In that number, 4,137,067 [40.55%] are registered as Democrats, and 3,825,727 [37.50%] as Republicans.

In the election, 4,239,350 [41.55%] voters showed up to cast a ballot.

For the Republican primary, 1,924,346 [50.30% of those registered] voted, while in the Democratic primary, 1,734,456 [41.92%] voted, for a total of 3,658,802 Presidential primary voters.

On the question of Amendment 1, the so-called tax cut, 4,132,687 people voted 2,648,956 [64.10%] for the amendment, and 1,483,731 [35.90%] against, so it is now part of the Florida constitution.

Typical Florida Election – SNAFU

Rook notes that Democratic voters had problems in Central Florida and Kevin Hayden has more reporting on that.

The I-4 Jammer notes that Polk County ran out of ballots in some precincts.

I noted that the state started posting results before the polls closed.

When, exactly, is this state going to figure out how to run an election?

They Keep Doing It

Election results are not supposed to be posted until the polls close, but once again Tallahassee has forgotten that the Panhandle is in the Central Time Zone and has been putting up results since the polls closed in the Eastern Time Zone.  The polls will actually close in a couple of minutes.
