The items in italics after checkpoints are awards for being first to those points. The distance is from the previous checkpoint. Some teams in the early going will travel at 12 mph [20kph] or better with all 16 dogs eager to go. There are reasons not to do this.

In Sled Dog News
Dallas Seavey, who has won 3 out of the last 4 Iditarods has come up with a new piece of training equipment: a refrigerated dog treadmill. Normally during warm weather sled dogs don’t move around much, because they have real problems with warm weather, and, yes, while they are short, summers in Alaska are warm. This will help maintain the conditioning of the dogs year round, giving Dallas an advantage.

Mushers Are Tough
How tough? When is the last time you met anyone who broke their opponent’s humerus [upper arm bone] while arm wrestling.
It was a spiral break, which means the bone was twisted until it broke. Normally the elbow or shoulder would dislocate before that happened.
It helps to know that for a long time during the off season Aliy worked as a carpenter, swinging a hammer all day, and like she said, she keeps in shape.
As an aside, when someone asks “heads or tails” in an Alaskan bar, it isn’t about flipping a coin. They are betting on the way someone is going to fall when they pass out. They are a fun-loving people.

It’s nice to see Yuka Honda at White Mountain. In her first attempt at the Yukon Quest she spent over a day getting over Eagle Summit. She and the puppies were so worn out that she had to scratch at Mile 101. Update: Yuka has finished at Nome!

Iditarod 2015 – Day 9
The Seaveys are battling it out for the lead with a man heading home. Being from Nome, Aaron’s team know by now they are heading home. Dallas is staying ahead by reducing rest time.
Two more scratches, Jan Stevens scratched at Huslia, and Katherine Keith at Unalakleet. Cindy Abbot now has the Red Lantern and is on the trail to Koyukuk. Cindy raced over 600 miles with a broken pelvis in her first attempt, so she’s not apt to give up.

Iditarod 2015 – Day 8
The top 10 teams are on the coast with the weather a bit warmer and the winds lower than yesterday. The equinox is almost here so there is plenty of light for travel. The end is going to depend on who has the right mix of running and resting that produces the fastest time. The lead will change from checkpoint to checkpoint, and it looks like a sprint to Nome to determine the winner.
Dallas has a 3 minute lead over Aaron at Koyuk.

Aliy has a real lead of almost two hours over Jeff out of Kaltag, but that isn’t much given the weather shifts around the Norton Sound where instant blizzards are not a rare occurrence.

Iditarod 2015 – Day 5
Aaron was first in to Huslia, but he needs to take both the 8 and 24 hour stops. It looks like Aliy is taking her 24-hour and will save the 8-hour for later. Jeff King is the only musher in the top 10 who has taken both.
As usual the Berington twins are running together. Anna had to hustle to catch Kristy and will take a decent lead over her at the 24-hour because of the start differential.
