Satellite Radio Was A Nice Concept

The CBC is reporting that U.S.-based Sirius XM said close to bankruptcy filing. They are trying for a Chapter 11 to restructure their debt load which is absurd.

Maybe giving Howard Stern $ 100 mill wasn’t such a great idea.

This is too bad if they go down the tubes, because they were the only way to escape from Clear Channel in many areas.

…not only does satellite radio allow that escape from Clear Channel, the variety of formats on XM or Sirius channels is greater than you can find in most places outside of major metropolitan areas. I never got into it myself (scowls from the spousal unit are powerful demotivators when the subject turns to “paying money to listen to the radio”), but that’s not to say that the thought hasn’t entered my mind when the limited regional format choices of country/EZ listening/oldie/metal/hiphop/NPR get old…

If I was still making long distant trips, there is no way I wouldn’t have it in my vehicle. There aren’t a lot of radio stations available for long sections of I-10 and I-80.

I’ve played with the idea, especially when my Mother bought her latest car, but backed off on the subscription fee.

I have it. It came with the Jeep. I pay the subscription fee. When I’m well away from civilization and want to hear the news and, especially, the *weather*, it’s well worth the subscription fee. Some of the places I roam, you can’t even get NOAA weather radio (yes, my Jeep’s CB is outfitted to receive NOAA weather radio). But the satellite radio always works, and has, e.g., let me know there was some really bad weather coming one afternoon so I could go stay in a hotel rather than camp out. The guys I was with decided they weren’t going to wimp out just because of some silly weather report on the satellite radio, and had a serious bad night. Me, I slept the sleep of the honest in a nice warm dry Motel 6 🙂 .

When I drove across the Dakotas there was nothing other that a Mexican station that faded in and out at night. I-10 was the same way after you were out of range of San Antonio heading West. No news or weather, and you had to be in a town for a semi-decent signal.

I hope it can be saved, because it is a good idea. They weakened each other going for market share, and the GOPression is killing the ad revenue.

Once you get outside the city there is zero on the radio. Satellite radio is a great idea, but they have bad timing. $12.95 / month is a bit steep. I’d say they are still in the skimming the market stage. Prices would have to be half that to entice the number of subscribers they need.

I do like the idea of Radio Margaritaville though. 🙂

They are already tagging you for the receiver, so they should come down on the price, or people will drop it first thing when they cut back.
