While 96 teams made the ceremonial start in Anchorage, only 95 will be racing out of Willow. Veteran G.B. Jones(45) of Wasilla, Alaska has pulled out for health reasons. He entered hoping to be well for the race, but he isn’t, so he decided to run in the 11-mile Anchorage parade and then scratch.

I’m so sorry! We’ve been watching G.B. Jones every year for the last 5 years since my Girl Scout troop found his dogs’ photos on-line. We rooted for him all the way with the duct-taped sled and boots, admired his spirit, and loved his care of his dogs (e.g. scratching last year when Aafes ran away). We will miss you!!! Best wishes.
He apparently was injured and just hadn’t healed enough to make the attempt. Last year the race banged up a lot of people who haven’t been able to get back in racing fitness.
