I Told you This Was Coming

Via McClatchy in DC, Marc Caputo of the Miami Herald notes in his article, Crist: State should oversee revote:

…But Republican House rules chairman David Rivera said he likes the idea of a mail election if the Democrats pay for it. Meanwhile, he has asked the House elections committee to research a bill that would ban the Democratic nominee from the Florida ballot if the national party refuses to seat the state’s delegates.

State Senate Republican leader Dan Webster came up with the idea, but said he’s not wedded to it.

When I said this people thought I was kidding, but they haven’t dealt with the Florida Republican Party of JEB and Katherine Harris. The primary date was changed to get Amendment 1 passed and to screw the Democrats in Florida. Thanks to the DNC, they succeeded.

Stella was present and can confirm that I uttered a stream of curses on reading this. The DNC’s rejection of the existing Florida vote is bad enough; the notion that the GOP is considering banning the Democratic candidate from the state’s ballot… well, them’s fightin’ words.

When the Republicans hold 65% of the seats in both the Florida house and senate, and the governor is a Republican, there isn’t much ammunition for a fight. When taken together with a rather odious “marriage” amendment that will be on the November ballot, discouraging Democratic voters would almost be a sacred duty.

The fact that the state will have no part in the decision, makes it very supportable under the current laws and constitution – the automatic slot on the ballot belongs to the Florida party, not the national party. The candidate would have to pay the filing fees and gather the required signatures like everyone else and run under a slightly different party name, like National Democratic Party.

I saw this coming because I’m familiar with the rules. For a group as enamored of the rules as the DNC, I’m surprised they didn’t see this coming.

I am not familiar with this and am just sitting here in shock. Is this possible? When will we know for sure? I have friends who are active duty military living in other places but still Florida residents. If this is true, they need to know so they can get registered elsewhere.

And why shouldn’t my vote count? Can I sue?

The Democratic National Committee can arguably be charged with violating the Florida election in their selection process, and, therefore the outcome of the DNC process won’t be valid.

There is already a Federal lawsuit against the DNC filed by a Florida voter, and the process obviously discriminates against Florida voters, so it is a short step to refuse to place the nominee on the ballot.

I was talking about this in February.

It is very probable that the Democratic nominee won’t qualify for the Florida ballot unless they stop screwing around.

If the next meeting of the DNC rules committee results in them coming to their senses and acting according to their own rules, as written, the problem goes away, but I have low confidence in that happening.

To be sure they get counted, military people need to register in another state if they can, and they want to vote for a Democrat for President. The Republicans are not going to pass up a shot at “a sitting duck”, it’s all politics.
