The Fun Continues

The legislature is in session, so the craziness and pandering continues.

Not satisfied with the toxic Amendment 2 [“marriage protection”, i.e. gay bashing], the Republicans have a couple of other amendments they want on the November ballot.

Sinfonian gives the basics behind the effect of the anti-Blaine amendment, essentially making it possible for the state to hand out tax dollars to church groups, something that is currently banned in the Florida constitution. The Christianists were surprised to find out that it wasn’t just the Catholic schools who couldn’t get tax money under the state constitution, so the Republicans are going to amend it so they can divert public school funding to unaccredited schools operated without any oversight by religious groups, the real purpose of the various school voucher bills.

Sinfonian also has word about a Florida version of the failed Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights from Colorado. Colorado had to suspend this turkey when they discovered that it didn’t do what it was supposed to do, and state and local governments were going bankrupt. You really have to wonder about the level of self-loathing required to run for public office when you believe that everyone in public office is an incompetent and/or criminal.

It’s too bad you can’t require mental health and intelligence testing of people running for public office. Things would certainly get boring if all we had were competent people doing their jobs in government.

PZ Myers is upset: Florida did it: their ridiculous “academic freedom” bill that promoted creationism has been approved by their senate committee. Well, committee approval was a given. Now it’s a wait to see if the Republicans think this will improve their chances of election in the fall.

The governor is Republican, and the Republicans hold 65% of the seats in both chambers. They can do whatever they want. With an extremely low turnout election probable this fall, it’s a good time for them to get their wish list passed.
