More Pictures
Dr. Masters has another set of before and after pictures, this time of Gilchrist, Texas, which essentially no longer exists.
This time he is using photos from the Hurricane Ike Images of the National Geodetic Survey for the “after” images.

wow. and i thought waveland looked bad….
They got it coming in and going out. There were sections of our part of the barrier island that looked like that, with houses pushed into the Sound and the island scrubbed clean, but we don’t have anyone out there but emergency personnel during hurricanes. We learned our lesson.
our island too.
these people stayed for ivan, and one of the [weather channel?] tv personalities stayed with them, giving us periodic updates. it was way cool, but at the same time, not really a good idea to encourage people to do that sort of thing.
Not really a good idea = mentally defective.
That is Rollover Pass. Sadly, for those people who still have land where their homes used to be, they’re likely to rebuild (assuming they evacuated and thus survived). The reason? If you don’t rebuild, flood insurance will only reimburse you for the cost of the structure on the land, not for the land itself. So you have enough money to rebuild on the same land but not enough to buy an equivalent home elsewhere.
Of course, for folks whose land is now at the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico they are not rebuilding anything, because there’s nothing to rebuild. So I guess they go live in a trailer park somewhere…

After Ivan we had a brand new house, it had never been lived in, survive virtually untouched, but it was untouched on a sandbar in the middle of the Sound, while there was a channel cut where their land had been. It was on metal pilings and the whole thing, foundation and all got pushed off the island.
They should just buy them out to prevent anyone building there, unfortunately they don’t do it until the third claim.
Well, at least there will be some construction work on the Gulf Coast, because the workers have been idle for months. I think were are going to lose our Hispanic population.
