Another Cold War Memory

Catnapping of Odd Neighbor Illustrations is another child of the Cold War and has a wonderful memory and some doggerel of an event from 46 years ago today.

I’m just wondering why the pickles would explode but it does make an interesting memory.

I vaguely remember a warning about the canning process that leads to this problem.

I know in the actually canning factory where I worked in the summer, the water used to fill the cans with the salt tablet and vegetable wasn’t hot enough, when you pulled them out of the pressure cooker cans would explode.

We did sweet pickles, so it may be something in the dill process, but I’ve the results in cellars, i.e. exploded jars.
