Early Voting Hours Extended

Via the Pensacola Beach Blog, Governor Charley Crist has extended the hours for early voting in Florida with Executive Order 08-217

I order the Supervisors of Elections to open early voting sites from 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. through October 31, 2008 and open early voting sites for a total of twelve (12) hours between 7 a.m. November 1, 2008 and 7 p.m. November 2, 2008.

It is fairly difficult to portray yourself as the party of “the common man” when you restrict early voting locations, and limit the time to the middle of the work day.  This has been a disaster all over the state.

I assume that this is another Reaganesque unfunded mandate, i.e. the counties are going to be required to come up with the money for another expense that wasn’t in their budget.

It is, however, a very unRepublican thing to do. I can imagine this is another Crist FU to McCain. Even Rethuglicans admit that their best chance in this election is to restrict access to the voting booth.

Not in North Florida, where their base lives. They have their magical mystery database that scrubs people that got traffic tickets in Mongolia, but that isn’t used on the Panhandle.

The early voting locations and hours are a real PITA locally. It is a very long walk to the building from the parking lot in the South County, so my Mother isn’t at all interested.

traffic tickets in mongolia, that would be me.

i’ve done early voting exactly twice, figuring the first time was a fluke. nuh uh, waited in line nearly 3 hours both times. the longest wait i’ve ever had at either of my regular polling places in the past 10-15 years was maybe 10-15 minutes.

If she felt inclined to use her walker instead of her cane, my Mother could walk the block to out polling location at the town hall. You park about 10 feet from the front and have a ramp or stairs to get in. There is never a line, although two precincts vote there.

The early polling location is 10 miles away out in the middle of nothing and the front door is 100 feet from the parking lot. Heaven only knows where the voting is taking place inside the building.

I’ll wait.
