Milestones

Yesterday marked Elayne Riggs’s decade in blogtopia. One of the archæobloggers, she has been posting Silly Sites for 10 years with few breaks in her daily output. One of her ‘blogarounds’ is a phenomena in its own right.

Today Fallenmonk and Jill of Cookies in Heaven and skippy the bush kangaroo celebrate birthdays.

Sigh, we are all getting older. Seems like it happens every day. 😉

As long as it indeed DOES keep happening every day…

“Riggs’s”

Ah, thank you! Another Strunk and White man! Always apostrophe-‘s’!

I use just the apostrophe if it is a real plural, but not if it simply ends in ‘s’. That was the rule I learned, and I staying with it.

I’m reminded of the T-shirt “The cost of living keeps going up … but most people seem willing to pay it.”

I check the Local Puppy Trainer every day to see if I’m in the Obits.

Yours was the rule I was taught as a child, but Strunk is emphatic about a different rule… the “always use apostrophe-‘s’ rule… and IIRC that’s what the Chicago Manual of Style follows, and hence so do many university thesis standards. And so do I. Its consistency is less strain on my old man’s memory. 🙂

I would have to root around for my MLA handbook, which is what the last university I studied at used, but I have stayed with the original rules I was taught in the ‘Dark Ages’, i.e. the Eisenhower years.

I admit the Strunk rule makes things clear as to the intent of the writer to form a possessive, but old knowledge dies hard and slowly.

THANK YOU, Bryan for the Birthday Wishes. 😉

Sorry it took me so long to thank you. It took me this long to admit that I have reached one of those “milestone” ages. I am coming out of shock just now.

After the first two and birthday ending in zero tends to be a downer, so I understand. I realize that not everyone is thrilled by having birthdays, but no having them is generally considered a bad thing 😉

Yah, getting older sucks, but the alternative sucks more ;).
