Things Are Different Down Here
BBC reporting: Bullet causes US man’s headache
A bullet has been removed from behind the right ear of a US man who went to hospital complaining of a headache.
Michael Moylan, 45, from the state of Florida, is quoted as saying he had woken up with a headache so severe he thought it was caused by an aneurysm.
His wife, April, took him to hospital but left when the bullet was found. She was arrested later over the shooting, but said it was an accident.
Mr Moylan remains in hospital in a stable condition.
Y’all, we have no-fault divorce in this state. You can do it yourself without any lawyers. I know the legislature seem to think that guns solve everything, but there are other remedies available.
I just don’t understand why people keep moving down here.
Update: Major bummer, shot and busted.

My Bad
When I did my Single Payer post I should have included the cover story from Pensacola’s alt weekly, The Independent News.
Today Escambia County voted on a ½¢ increase to the sales tax to cover the cost of the uninsured in the county. The INWeekly bundled a couple of stories as The Cost Of The Uninsured to give people a feel for the problem.
It’s worth a read, because the situation is only going to get worse until we get serious about solving it.

It’s The Water
The fine folks at Facing South have been posting on the efforts of Florida Power and Light to build a new generation plant on the west side of Lake Okeechobee. They say they need more capacity to keep up with growth.
Randy Neal reports:
Earlier this week, the Florida Public Service Commission denied a Florida Power and Light “Needs Determination” permit for a huge coal-fired power plant on 4900 acres of wilderness near the Everglades National Park in Glades Co. Florida, effectively killing the project.
Sue Sturgis writes that FPL is now talking about building a nuclear plant, on the same site.
It’s time for a reality check. It doesn’t make any difference whether they use coal, natural gas, oil, ethanol, biomass, or nuclear fission, they are still going to be heating water to drive a steam turbine, and there isn’t enough water to do it. Ignoring the fact that if something isn’t done about global warming the area is going to be under sea water in a few decades, they just put out a wild fire on the what was once the bottom of Lake Okeechobee because of the drought.
There are no spare millions of gallons of water available every day to be used by a steam turbine. The Florida Aquifer is under stress and development in South Florida has to be reined in, because there quite simply isn’t enough water for the people already living there.

Tropical Storm Barry
It looks like Tropical Storm Barry will stay a tropical storm until it makes landfall in Florida’s “armpit” and then continue though Georgia and the coastal Carolinas.
It should help with the many fires that are burning in the region and bring some rain for farmers who have been dealing with a drought.
Dr. Jeff Masters was caught off guard by Barry because it formed despite 20 knot wind shear.

Hurricane Season
This is the first day of the 2007 Hurricane Season.
Jeff Masters has the forecast outlooks, which aren’t very nice.
The first name for the season was Andrea, with Barry the next name on the roster.
Now we can wait for the official end of the season on December 1st.

Now The Lake Is Burning
I talked about the fire in the Okefenokee Swamp, and now about 2000 acres is on fire in what was the bed of Lake Okeechobee.
We really need some rain.
