A Gift For Charlie

It looks like Charlie Pierce’s life just got a whole lot easier. He was in good shape having lived in Massachusetts when Romney was allegedly governor [something the Mittster seems to be denying], and now Mitt the Twit has chosen “the zombie-eyed granny-starver from Wisconsin” as his running mate. Charlie is in hog heaven wallowing in the muck.

It would seem that Romney felt he needed to balance the ticket with someone the Republican base and the Village seemed to like. So now the Republicans have two boring pasty-white men to lead their challenge.

The real problem is whether these two can attract enough votes to make stealing elections possible.

Precisely. We already have evidence that GOPers will not hesitate to steal the presidency (see: year 2000). By now, it’s looking as if they have the motive (just look at the polls), and the means (voter ID laws, not to mention your governor’s voter roll purge). Opportunity? that’s just an old Mars rover, isn’t it? Certainly the GOPers have no, um, curiosity…

It has to be close to be stolen, or there will be too much trouble and Repubs know it. With the selection of Ryan, Florida just dropped off the list and Obama just got a boost, because seniors weren’t really getting worked up over Romney, but they know who Ryan is and what he wants to do. Rubio would have been a better choice, and not just for Florida.

They might not make the effort to vote ‘for’ Obama, but they will be there to vote ‘against’ Ryan.

I’m waiting to see if the busload of Nuns who have been protesting Ryan’s budget, will start following the Romney campaign around the country. That would be a hoot.

Now you’ve done it. All the old limericks involving the word “Nuns” are running through my brain, competing for attention…

Rubio, from our standpoint, would have been a hazardous pick: like the worst of Republicans, he talks a good game. The Zombie-Eyed Granny-Starver, OTOH, is a gift to the Obama campaign and (separately) to the American people, probably balancing at least a few hundred million in campaign contributions to Rmoney.

You know, I never used to be such an “eat the rich” kind of guy. But old age and dwindling fortunes are rapidly changing me. I wonder if BBQ sauce would help me overcome my distaste. I’m already persuaded that Ryan, at least, is a vegetable…

As a vegetable he would be like a palm heart – not really worth the effort required to make it edible and there is a lot of destruction and waste involved.

I don’t think there can be any doubt that selecting Ayn-Rand-Paul-Ryan was because the Mittster is more worried about the Republican base than ‘swing voters’.

Well, I think you may overestimate the intelligence of the American people. That is, the majority of Americans have been told that Ryan is a “brave”, “bold” politician who is against “entitlements” (i.e., free gubment money for ni[CLANG!]). The actual details of Ryan’s policies, and how they’d have the elderly eating cat food and disabled veterans locked out of VA hospitals and forced to scrounge on the streets for dime bags as their only medication, well those aren’t known by the majority of Americans, and they’d have trouble wrapping their illiterate innumerate heads around the very concept that any American could ever propose such a thing and accuse you of lying if you told them exactly what Ryan was proposing. That’s just how it is. Sure, they know Ryan wants to cut things, but they assume that means he wants to cut things for *other* people, i.e., those *dusky* fellers, not for *them*. Duh.

His problem in Florida is that among the elderly are a lot of people with a lot of business experience who can understand the numbers and know what he is planning, and they don’t like it. They don’t all hate their kids and grandkids, and don’t want to see them ripped off. They have been talking to their friends and pointing out what Ryan is up to with his budget. These are people who know what happened to those kids and grandkids when the bubble burst and the 401Ks evaporated with the value of their houses.

The Republican base buys it because it speaks to their biases, but the rest of the country can be made to understand if the Dems would just do it, and not screw around playing games.
