The broadcast media is actually mentioning the fact that Ryan hasn’t run the numbers, so he claims he doesn’t know the specifics about his ‘budget’.
If you don’t “run the numbers”, you don’t have a budget, you have a collection of guesses. They have run the numbers and know what a piece of offal their proposal represents. If they admit that they have done the math, then they can’t make their wild claims without providing some justification.
This is the same kind of stall as not releasing tax returns – they don’t want facts that can be checked to be put on the record, because they know the facts “have a known liberal bias”.
One of the facts the media should be reporting is that Paul Ryan and the Republican Congress voted for the bills that created this massive deficit that they are having a hissy fit about. Bill Clinton showed everyone how to reduce the deficit, and how to pay off the national debt, but the Republicans, aided and abetted by Greenspan, claimed that paying off the debt was a terrible idea.

Republicans, Ryan included, created this mess, so it isn’t logical to assume they know how to fix it.

Humpty Dumpty encapsulates their attitude towards the media, and the media accept it as reasonable.
The media is now totally confused because the Dems have stopped apologizing when the Repubs cry foul, as they have always done in the past. Harry Reid and Joe Biden have changed the game, and neither the media nor the Repubs know what to do.
Paul Ryan hasn’t a clue about budget construction, but at least he’s ignorant about foreign policy… oh, wait…
Like all of hypocritical Repubs Ayn-Rand-Paul-Ryan bellied up to the trough to gobble up as much of the stimulus as possible after voting against it . If the Repubs think its wrong, they shouldn’t do it. This is why the Blue States end up supporting the Red States – the Red States are the real ‘Welfare Queens’, they want all of the services, but they don’t want to pay for them.

Total Information Awareness by any other name …
This is fairly worthless for generating real information about real threats. They are gathering so much data that they will never be able to actually produce anything that serves a need. This is designed from the bottom up for false positives.
‘Rules based filtering’ is a search algorithm, and Google is probably the best in the world in the field. So, how likely are you to find what you want in the first page of a Google search, unless you are extremely precise in your search terms?
Data mining is more art than science at this point and professional paranoids are not notably skilled at either. There aren’t enough real ‘terrorist’ events in the US to even provide reliable parameters to construct the search terms. As most of these events are the work of individuals or small groups who have no formal training in organizing and planning an attack, there isn’t going to be a pattern to find.
This whole operation is polluted with ‘Cold War thinking’.
If they can successfully complete a ‘proof of concept’ test, then this thing can be taken seriously as a tool. Let’s see them predict what the stock market will do on a day by day basis for a year. The stock market is a small, closed system, so if they can find terrorists with their analytical acumen, the stock market should be a cinch.
They have no proof that what they are offering has any value to anyone except the investors in the company.

Funny you mentioned Google. I guess the US Gov doesn’t want any competition when it comes to tracking it’s citizens. I suspect Google would do a much better job of it too! 😉

Of course, that’s nothing new. And it’s not unusual for a Gov to be hypocritical in this regard either. LOL
Google does commercial data mining and is one of the most experienced and efficient users of the technology. If they can’t be any more effective than they are, what are the odds of a corporation that was founded for a totally different purpose being able to match their abilities, much less surpass them?
Almost every ‘terrorist plot’ that the Feds have identified have been ‘nurtured’ by Fed informants. These are amateurs trying to pull off plots, so they don’t act with an identifiable pattern, because they aren’t working from a pattern.
If they find a pattern it will probably be ISI or Mossad at work, not ‘terrorists’. Another possibility is that it will find a lot of FBI, DEA, and DHS people doing things that people are not supposed to talk about. This can be really embarrassing if it isn’t handled carefully. Which is, of course, why Wikileaks freaks these people out.

Ever since Reagan, the intel community has been so screwed up that anything is possible. Their biggest single concern has been their budgets, not their products. The contractors that Repubs keep hiring make more money than the government employees, and drain off resources, so there is no love lost between the two. If Stratfor is getting anything real it is from people looking to change jobs.
Even more than the government shops, the contractors tell the pols what they want to hear, which is why they get contracts.
