Some Variety In Food Poisonings
E. Coli was getting boring, so there’s a new “wee beastie” in this Associated Press report, Gourmet Boutique recalls 143 tons of meat
NEW YORK (AP) — A New York food company is recalling more than 286,000 pounds of meat and poultry because it might be contaminated with the bacteria Listeria monocytogenes.
The voluntary recall includes several different brands of fresh and frozen products made by Gourmet Boutique, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said Saturday.
Included are some types of chicken salad and sandwiches sold under the name Gourmet Boutique, and several frozen wraps and burritos sold under the names “Jan’s” and “Archer Farms.”
Listeria contamination is a hell of a lot more dangerous than the report indicates. It can act to make a lot of existing problems worse, and is difficult to diagnose unless someone is looking for it. It is almost always found in processed food, like pre-package lunch meat, and it is the result of unsanitary manufacturing facilities.

meat inspection is so last century.
The general inspection process for listeria is to walk and and breathe in through your nose. If you detect mold, mildew, or sewage it is probable that there is a listeria problem, as well as mosquito borne diseases.
Daily steam cleaning of equipment and good floor drains eliminate the problem. Too many have gone to 24-hour operation in factory, from multiple factories and don’t clean the equipment often enough. The drains become clogged because they aren’t flushed through the daily cleanings and provide another area for “wee beaties” to breed in.
I worked in a cannery during summers at college.
probably cheaper faster easier to let a few hudred people die every year.
i counted birds, fish, butterflies, and newts [and once got trapped by an alligator] during summers at college.
It was minimum wage, but 100 hours per week, which is why there were so many teachers and college students working there.
When all that happens is a fine, why worry. They just don’t care.
