FireFrom KEYT La Brea Fire Still Burning in Los Padres National Forest

The La Brea Fire has now burned approximately 10,500 acres. The fire broke out Saturday around 2:50 in the afternoon. It is quickly spreading in the back country of the Los Padres National Forest, about 16 miles west of New Cuyama, and 26 miles east of Santa Maria.

Sigh. The Los Padres National Forest has become the no-go’em for local hikers. Nothing there but fallen-over charred trees blocking all the trails that haven’t slid off the sides of the hills due to erosion from all the vegetation getting burned away. Quite sad…

It makes the state’s water problems even worse, with nothing to hold the water or the soil.

The fire “fuel” way back there hasn’t really seen “action” since the ’30’s.
Fire is closing in on 15,000 acres. Saw some local firefighters going on the highway up there. Smoke is billowing in the distance, the sky is red, the smell of smoke can be detected, but fortunately for those of us down in South County, we don’t have that infernal ash raining down everywhere. North County isn’t so lucky though. Oh, yeah…that’s is the Rethuglican part of the County. Nice to have a socialized system saving their a****s.

Just tack up more costs to the bankrupt State to fight yet another fire. Haven’t heard what caused it, but so help me, if it is some numbskull clearing brush…..
grrrrrrrr….

So far it’s in the National Forest, so the Feds will be picking up the tab. InciWeb is saying “under investigation” so they haven’t pinned anything down, but they are flying against it and the humidity is still good.

Because of the humidity and wind direction they have been able to do some back-burning to build a fire line, and get some big equipment in at other points, but the chaparral is ready to go in that area. It has been a matter of when, not if.

Better now than during a Santa Ana.
