La Brea Update – 8/13

FireThe fire in the San Rafael Wilderness area has now burned over 48,450 acres and is 10% contained. Structures to the North of the fire in Cottonwood Canyon are now under threat and evacuations have been ordered.

There have been 2 minor injuries fighting the fire which has already cost > $6.3 million.

Currently there are 89 engines, 57 crews, 28 dozers, 5 tankers, 10 helicopters, and 1,641 total personnel assigned to the fire.

Another fire broke out up in North County this afternoon. Ash is falling like snow as the wind is blowing it all back down here. The orange glow to the sun is a little unnerving…always make you feel like you live on Mars.

They discuss lighting some backfires on the south side to clear fuel north of the newly re-cleared fire lanes left from the Zaca fire. That’s probably the source.
