Rumsfeld Owns You

Via Holden at First Draft, Rumsfeld is doing so well maintaining force strength that the Washington Post reports: Army Using Policy to Deny Reserve Officer Resignations.

That’s right, you go in and finish your contract, the whole 8 years, and they can still pull you back anytime they want: you can’t escape, they own you forever.

This is why I can’t recommend the military to anyone, ever again, unless the laws are changed to end these practices.

Obscene. It’s bad enough that they obviously plan to draft “newbies” when the time comes, not the time to defend our country, but the time for another preemptive invasion. It’s far worse that they recall or retain people who have indisputably paid their dues. Why would anyone join the military under those circumstances?

It took decades to rebuild after Vietnam, and it will take longer after this mess. They are destroying the effectiveness of the military. They are also in danger of putting people who are burned out back under pressure where they will break and people will die.

It’s criminal.

I could tell you all day about men I know who have been aimless types out of high school but turned their lives around successfully thanks to the military.

When it works, the military gives a young man or woman invaluable training – not just in their assigned task, but in LIFE and the value of self-discipline.

I keep thinking about a movie I went to last summer. During the previews, there was a recruiting ad for one or the other military services. Many in the audience laughed…mostly young people. And they’re right – the idea of military service has been turned into a joke.

It used to be a solution, and now it’s a problem.
