Passover

At sundown today the Jewish commemoration of the flight out of Egypt begins. Pesach, the festival of freedom, is the story of the Book of Exodus, and fictionally presented in the film, The Ten Commandments, which will probably be on television this week.

This is a time of Matzah [unleavened bread], Marror [bitter herbs], wine and the retelling of the story of founding of Israel.

Living with Jewish roommates in college, this was an “interesting” experience, especially when a grandfather [and Rabbi] showed up to ensure everything in our suite was in order for Passover. First, my roommates cleaned up, then the grandfather wandered about inspecting everything. Not being able to bring snacks back to the room became sort of an obsession.

when i typed “marror” into the search box, google asked me “did you mean mirror?”

i’d always known about the ‘bitter herbs’ but never knew exactly which herbs they were talking about. i love horseradish, but grated fresh? by itself? wow.

As a teaching tool it is really hard to beat – you remember the taste and the lesson.
